Tottenham Hotspur have been informed that Djed Spence was rightly sent off during their 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

Spurs conceded the only goal of the game just shy of the half hour mark as Morgan Gibbs-White's through ball was slotted home by Anthony Elanga. In truth, Forest always seemed the most likely to score the second goal of the match with Ange Postecoglou's side surprisingly blunt up front.

The loss was then compounded in stoppage time when Spence, who had been booked earlier in the game for throwing the ball away, received a second caution after upending Jota Silva on the counterattack. The full-back seemed bemused after being sent off but former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher was confident the right decision was made.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Ref Watch, Gallagher explained: "He doesn't need to do it. It's not wise in the 94th minute, no need to do it.

"No intention to play the ball, he's paid for a rash moment of angriness earlier when he threw the ball away." Spurs also appealed for a penalty when they felt Murillo had handled in the penalty area but that was waved away.

According to Gallagher, this was also the right decision, adding: "He would be so angry if a penalty was given for this. It just hits him, we all know he can't move his arm so it can't be a penalty."

The defeat leaves Tottenham languishing in mid-table, ten points off the top four and nine points above the relegation zone. Next up is a return to North London when Spurs host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday - a game that Spence shall now miss through suspension.
