Tottenham set for Premier League reunion and the impact it could have on summer transfer deal
The 2024/25 Premier League season is slowly starting to take shape as we approach the end of the current campaign. On Thursday it was confirmed that next season will get under way on Saturday, August 17 and come to a conclusion on Sunday, May 25.
The Premier League also revealed that there will be no mid-season break next term and that there will be no league fixture on Christmas Eve after a controversial change to the schedule for this season. Just over 24 hours on from that announcement, confirmation arrived of the first Championship team to earn promotion to the Premier League.
Following their surprise relegation 11 months ago, Leicester City have bounced back at the first time of asking under head coach Enzo Maresca. Leading the way for the vast majority of the season until suffering a late scare in recent weeks, the Foxes' promotion was confirmed on Friday evening as a result of Leeds United's 4-0 humiliation at relegation-threatened QPR.
Returning to the pitch on Monday evening when they visit Preston North End, Leicester have the opportunity to wrap up the Championship title in their final two games of the season as their destiny is very much in their own hands. Ipswich Town, who currently sit in third, currently trail the East Midlands club by five points with a game in hand over them but they would need their rivals to drop points in their next two games to have any chance of lifting the title.
Leicester's promotion does mean that a couple of reunions will take place next season when Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham side face the Foxes. The first will see Harry Winks come up against Tottenham for the first time since departing his boyhood club last July.
In and out of the team prior to his Tottenham Hotspur Stadium exit, the midfielder has had the opportunity to play week in, week out for Leicester and he has gone on to play a pivotal role for his new side in the middle of the park. Starting 43 of their 44 games this season and absent from the matchday squad just the once, the 28-year-old, who has netted two vital goals for his side this campaign, has proved to be a fine signing for Leicester and one that has helped them regain their Premier League status.

Whereas Winks swapped Tottenham for Leicester almost ten months ago, James Maddison headed in the opposite direction as he penned a long-term contract with Spurs. An influential figure in the opening months of 2023/24 before his campaign was unfortunately brought to a temporary stop due to injury in November, the England international has struggled to recapture his form since returning but he will be intent on doing so in the remainder of the season as the Lilywhites look to secure Champions League football.
Such a vital figure for Leicester in his five seasons with the Foxes after contributing goals and assists aplenty, Maddison will be looking forward to a return to the King Power Stadium in the 2024/25 Premier League season. The return of Tottenham vs Leicester City as a Premier League fixture will also mean plenty more goals and drama, with 28 goals scored in the last five meetings between the teams.
Leicester's return to the promised land could potentially have an impact on another Tottenham player this summer. Joe Rodon is looking to follow in Leicester's footsteps by earning promotion to the Premier League with Leeds United. However, the West Yorkshire club may now have to do so via the play-offs after their 4-0 defeat at QPR opened up the door for Ipswich to take full advantage.
The Tractor Boys are currently one point behind Leeds in the Championship standings but they crucially have two games in hand to play over their promotion rivals. The first of those two games comes on Saturday evening when Ipswich travel to play-off chasing Hull City, with their next game in hand coming in midweek against Coventry City.
Two incredibly tough fixtures for Ipswich, maximum points from both would seal a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2002 and ensure that the battle for automatic promotion does not go down to the final day. Rodon and Leeds will be hoping that Ipswich do slip up over the next week, thus allowing them to also return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Leeds will certainly want to avoid the play-offs due to their dismal record in the end of season competition. Defeated in the first-ever edition of the play-offs against Charlton Athletic in 1987, Leeds then lost the 2006 Championship play-off final and 2008 League One play-off final to Watford and Doncaster Rovers respectively.
In 2009, they failed to make the final after losing to Millwall in the semis, with Derby County then inflicting even more misery on them ten years later in a Championship play-off semi-final classic at Elland Road. If it is to be another play-off finish for Leeds, they will be hoping it is sixth time lucky with a place in the Premier League up for grabs.
In terms of Rodon's long-term future, the Wales international has been a colossal figure at the back for the West Yorkshire club this season and all connected with Leeds are desperate for the centre-back to make his loan deal permanent. That may be a transfer that is easier for Leeds to complete if they are a Premier League team once again as a second successive season in the Championship could raise questions over a permanent Elland Road move for Rodon, especially as better offers could potentially be on the table.
As the 26-year-old has been such a pivotal figure in his team's promotion push, Rodon should have plenty of transfer interest regardless as he is quite clearly not in Postecoglou's long-term thinking at Tottenham. The next few weeks are going to be key for Rodon and Leeds as they look to join Leicester City in earning promotion to the Premier League.
