Tottenham seal Mathys Tel deadline day U-turn days after Daniel Levy snub
Tottenham Hotspur pulled off a deadline-day coup by convincing Mathys Tel into a U-turn over a move from Bayern Munich and secring an option to buy him in the summer.
Tel, considered one of the brightest young attacking talents in Europe, had initially rejected a move to Spurs after chairman Daniel Levy had flown out to Munich last week to try to clinch a deal.
But Tottenham managed to resurrect a deal and Tel flew to London to complete his move before Monday’s 11pm deadline.
Tel has initially joined Spurs on loan until the end of the season, with Tottenham negotiating an option to buy him for £45 million on a six-year contract in the summer.
In a statement confirming the move, Tottenham said: “We are delighted to announce the signing of Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich, subject to international clearance and work permit.
“The France Under-21 international will join the club on loan until the end of the 2024/25 season with an option to make the move permanent in the summer. He will wear the No 11 shirt.”
Head coach Ange Postecoglou is said to have spoken to Tel to help convince him to join Tottenham and the teenager’s arrival is a big boost for the Australian.
Postecoglou had been desperate to strengthen his attacking options this month and Tel, who is able to play anywhere across the front three, will do that.
Talks with Manchester United broke down on Sunday night
Spurs had been in danger of missing out to Manchester United in their pursuit but negotiations between Bayern, the player and the Old Trafford club broke down on Sunday evening.
It is believed that United were unwilling to commit to a £5 million loan fee to sign Tel until the end of the season.
That allowed Tottenham to revisit their own move and give Tel enough guarantees over playing time to convince him to leave Bayern until the end of the season.
Should his international clearance come through in time, then Tel could make his Spurs debut in Thursday night’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool, which Tottenham lead 1-0 from the first leg.
But having completed a deal for Tel, Tottenham missed out on signing Axel Disasi on loan for the rest of the season after Aston Villa agreed a late move with Chelsea.
Disasi had resisted a switch across London while he waited to see if Villa could agree a deal with Chelsea and that finally happened late on Monday night with a few hours of the window remaining.
Villa agreed to pay in the region of £5 million to take Disasi on loan for the remainder of the season, which is similar to the offer Spurs had made. Having reached an agreement in the evening, Chelsea and Villa submitted a deal sheet before the 11pm deadline in order to fully complete the move.
Centre-back Kevin Danso arrived on loan at the weekend to strengthen Tottenham’s defence, but Postecoglou said his squad was still light in that area following a season-ending ACL injury to Radu Dragusin and with the club still wary about Micky van de Ven’s fitness.
Felix, Chukwuemeka and Chilwell leave Chelsea
Chelsea gave the green light for Joao Felix to join AC Milan on loan in a deadline-day move – just six months after re-signing him for £46million.
Felix was left out of Chelsea’s squad for Monday night’s victory over West Ham United after accepting a loan deal worth around £5m for the 25-year-old.
AC Milan beat off rival interest from Internazionale for Felix, who spent most of the first half of the season on Chelsea’s substitutes’ bench.
It was a busy day of outs for Chelsea, although the Stamford Bridge club did agree a deal worth in the region of £12m to sign Mathis Amougou from French club St-Etienne.
Amougou has played for France Under-18s and will spend the rest of the season at Chelsea.

Chilwell is one of Chelsea’s highest earners on around £200,000-a-week, which was completely out of Palace’s price range.
In order to allow him to play for the second half of the season, Chelsea agreed a loan deal in which Palace will pay around half his weekly salary.
It is thought that Palace will pay Chilwell in the region of £70,000-a-week, but that does not take into consideration various add-ons such as image rights.
Chilwell still has two years remaining on his Chelsea contract and has not had to take a wage cut to move to Palace for the rest of the season.
Having been frozen out by head coach Enzo Maresca, Chilwell has just played 45 minutes of football so far this season – against Barrow in the Carabao Cup.
Chilwell said: “I’m very excited to be here. Crystal Palace is a club that’s going in a great direction. You look at the last few months, with the results and how the team’s playing, and it was a no-brainer to make the decision to come here.”
Midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka travelled to Germany to complete a loan move to Borussia Dortmund, but Felix’s loan meant that young defender Aaron Anselmino could not join Marseille on loan because Chelsea had filled all of their available international loan slots.
