Tottenham 3-2 Eintracht Frankfurt LIVE! Champions League result, match stream, latest reaction and updates

Tottenham vs Eintracht Frankfurt - LIVE!

Tottenham took a big step towards qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League after coming from behind to beat 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2.

In a busy first half, two well taken goals from Heung-min Son either side of a Harry Kane penalty calmed the home fans after Europa League champions Frankfurt had taken an early lead through Daichi Kamada. Any hopes of a Frankfurt comeback were dashed on the hour mark when they were reduced to 10 men after defender Tuta was sent off for his second booking in a matter of minutes after twice bringing down Son on the left wing.

The German side did spook the hosts with three minutes remaining when Faride Alidou rose highest from an inswinging corner to head the ball down and in. But even with Kane missing another penalty, Spurs held on. The win put Antonio Conte’s side top of Group D on seven points.

Match analysis

22:30 , Matt Verri

Tottenham finally made an impact back in the Champions League with a hectic 3-2 win over ten-man Eintracht Frankfurt, which could go down as the night Antonio Conte’s attack finally clicked into gear this season.

Conte’s side returned to the top of their group, and the head coach will hope they have also returned to the form after a series of dogged but underwhelming displays at the start of the campaign.

Heung-min Son scored twice, including a sublime volley, to offer hope that he has really turned a corner, and Harry Kane was also sharp, scoring and winning a penalty in between the Korean’s fine finishes.

But an encouraging performance was undone in the final 25 minutes, when Spurs’ intensity dropped and they conceded a sloppy second goal.

Son on very nervy conclusion to match...

22:14 , Matt Verri

“The last five minutes were really, really tough moments.

“In the Champions League we never know what’s going to happen, especially 3-2 in the last five minutes. It’s always tough so it was uncomfortable sitting on the bench and watching team-mates suffering.

“The most important thing is that we got three points.”

FT: Tottenham 3-2 Frankfurt

21:56 , Matt Verri

Spurs hold on! Frankfurt had no business still being in that in the final few seconds, but they were. A mess really from Conte’s side at the end there.

They’ve got the job done though and they got top of Group D.

21:55 , Matt Verri

90+4 mins: This is madness. Kane should settle it again, overhits the pass to Gil who would have had a tap-in.

How is it this nervy? Frankfurt throwing everything at it still, so much space for Spurs to counter.

Ball dinked into the Spurs box, they’re scrambling around.. bodies everywhere! Shot comes in, Lloris saves. And breathe.

MISSED!

21:52 , Matt Verri

IT’S MILES OVER THE BAR!

When did Kane last do that? It’s an awful penalty.

21:50 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Kane with a great pass, Gil is through for Spurs... or not. Loses it and the chance goes.

But now he has it back, twisting past the challenges and he’s brought down! PENALTY!

Spurs are facing a nervy finale here after conceding a sloppy, sloppy second goal. Conte, who has now used all five of his subs, might wish he still had Dier and Son the pitch to see this out.

GOAL! Tottenham 3-2 Frankfurt | Faride Alidou 87'

21:47 , Matt Verri

Awful touch from Emerson, Frankfurt not giving up here and they have a corner.

And they score! Alidou with a brilliant header from the corner and all of a sudden this has become very interesting.

21:45 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Gil and Moura on, a rare sight indeed. Hojbjerg trudges off and it will also be Son getting a few minutes of rest.

Special performance from Son.

21:43 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Son has no interest in slowing anything down, he’s still buzzing around the pitch and causing problems.

Moura getting ready on the touchline, could be about to make his return to the first-team after injury.

21:40 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Romero pounces on a loose pass and charges up in attack, carrying on his run.

Kane wisely looks for Son instead, but can’t quite pull the pass off this time and Frankfurt can clear their lines.

21:37 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Skipp playing in a pretty advanced role on the right wing, has the unfortunate ‘honour’ of being right in front of Conte at pretty much all times.

Safe to say he’s getting plenty of advice. Another Spurs change - Sanchez on for Dier.

21:34 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Not a huge amount of pace in the game now, though Spurs are stilling pressing high in search of more goals.

Frankfurt would be delighted if they final whistle came with the score still 3-1.

Or maybe not, stunning run from Linstrom into the box. Digs an effort out, Lloris with a great save.

21:30 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Hasebe is immediately brought off, Frankfurt manager is not stupid.

Back to the matters on the pitch, Spurs corner as Dier’s free-kick is deflected behind. Son whips it in, doesn’t beat the first man.

21:27 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Hasebe is up and limping, he has somehow avoided a yellow card! That is miraculous.

Bentancur and Richarlison off for Spurs, Bissouma and Skipp on.

21:25 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Lindstrom skips away from Hojbjerg in the box, door is then slammed shut though.

Son leads the charge at the other end, they cannot get anywhere near him. Hasebe brings him down, already on a yellow... nine men?

Hasebe is rolling around pretending to be hurt, looks like it might work too.

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

21:22 , Matt Verri

Just as in the Marseille game here, Son ensures Spurs’ opponents are a man down after drawing two fouls from Tuta in the space of a few minutes, earning the defender bookings.

Conte will surely be thinking about subs and Everton on Saturday.

RED CARD!

21:20 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Hasebe with an awful challenge on the halfway line as Kane spins him once again, flies in.

Advantage played, where Tuta drags Son back and that’s a second yellow. Takes a while for the referee to realise it is a second booking - eventually the red comes out.

What on earth is Tuta complaining about.

21:18 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Son wins the free-kick and takes it himself, firing it into a good area with plenty of pace but Trapp can parry that away.

The goalkeeper then very nearly carries the ball behind for a corner under no pressure, just about keeps it in play. Bit strange.

21:16 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Kane jumping all over the back of Tuta, bit too keen to get on the end of that ball over the top.

Frankfurt struggling to get a kick at the moment - so easy for the hosts right now.

21:12 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Richarlison shrugs off his man and drives down the right wing, playing a low ball across the face of goal.

Sessegnon flying in at the back post, sees his effort from close-range saved. Brilliant work from Richarlison in the build-up.

21:10 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Frankfurt haven’t really got going since the break, Spurs dominating possession.

Feel like the Bundesliga side need to halve this deficit sooner rather than later, or this will slip away from them.

21:07 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Bright start to the half from Spurs, Son and Sessegnon both nearly in on goal in the space of a few seconds.

They look so much better when they play like this, rather than the more passive approach we’ve often seen.

Back underway!

Up and running again in north London.

Usual suspects...

A great response from Spurs who are halfway to a great result. One more goal and Conte can ring the changes ahead of Everton on Saturday.

Pick of the bunch...

HT: Tottenham 3-1 Frankfurt

20:50 , Matt Verri

Tottenham almost extend their lead just before break, Romero’s header is tipped away.

Well that was a fun half. Kamada put Frankfurt in front but from that point onwards it’s been utterly ruthless from Spurs.

Son with two goals, the second of which was a stunning volley, while Kane has scored from the penalty spot.

20:48 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Two minutes added on at the end of the half.

Spurs will be very satisfied with their efforts, assuming they make it to the break with a two-goal advantage.

20:46 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Lenz brought down by Emerson out wide, needlessly rash from the Spurs man once again. So, so pointless.

Not that it matters, Kamada with the free-kick in a good position but he sends it over everyone and out for a goal-kick.

20:45 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Lovely move again from Spurs, Son played in behind and his left-footed strike is well saved by the foot of Trapp.

A few inches further into the corner and Son would have had a first-half hat-trick. Sensational display from him.

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:44 , Matt Verri

Daylight for Spurs, who have been really impressive since going behind.

Son will take the plaudits for a stunning volley but Hojbjerg deserves credit for a great assist. He’s increasingly delivering in the final third.

20:43 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Bentancur flies in on Rode, late and that will be a yellow card.

When your own fans are groaning at the replays on the big screen, it’s not a great sign.

20:41 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Bit of a concern now for Spurs, Richarlison gets caught and stays down. Helped to his feet by Romero and Emerson, he looks fine.

Home fans in fine voice now - been some response from their side to falling behind.

GOAL! Tottenham 3-1 Frankfurt | Heung-min Son 36'

20:38 , Matt Verri

WHAT A FINISH!

Spurs in real control now. Hojbjerg skips away from the challenge on the right, stands a ball up to the back post and Son absolutely hammers a volley past Trapp and into the roof of the net.

20:37 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Match has calmed down after that frantic spell of goals, Tottenham content to just knock it around and take the sting out of proceedings.

Richarlison sets Son free with a good header, all by himself though and goes for goal from an impossible angle. Comfortable save.

20:34 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Lindstrom with a clever attempt from a tight angle, almost catches Lloris out but the goalkeeper gets down well to turn it behind for a corner.

Twice it’s put into the Spurs box, comes to nothing either time before Hojbjerg gets the job done on the third occasion.

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:33 , Matt Verri

Really spirited comeback by Spurs, who struggled to created chances in Germany but have scored two in 28 minutes here.

For all the complaints about their form, they’ve won every home game this season & are on course for another.

20:32 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Over to Frankfurt to respond now, been a brilliantly open match so far.

Spurs have been by far the better side since they conceded, showing more intent going forward. Will they stick to that, or drop back again now?

GOAL! Tottenham 2-1 Frankfurt | Harry Kane 28'

20:30 , Matt Verri

Never any doubt!

Keeper goes the right way but he’s never getting there, perfect penalty once again from Kane.

PENALTY TOTTENHAM!

20:29 , Matt Verri

Jakic it was with the challenge, looked to cut across Kane and bring him down.

And the referee agrees! Kane will have the chance to put Spurs in front from the spot.

20:28 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Kane down in the box, looked to be a fairly clumsy challenge as the referee waves away the appeals.

VAR having a long look at this - referee over to the monitor. This will surely be given now.

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:26 , Matt Verri

A classic Kane-Son combination levels the score. That kind of precision from assister and scorer is exactly what Spurs have been missing of late, and notably in Germany last week.

20:25 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Kane over the wall, and over the bar.

Got half of the job done, but it was never coming down in time. Frankfurt slowing things down a bit from the goal-kick, before deciding to kick it long.

Spurs completely on top now.

20:24 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Spurs have completely woken up. Sensational run from Son as he skips past the challenges into the box, tries to beat one man too many though.

Rode then handballs it 25 yards out though - Kane standing over it.

GOAL! Tottenham 1-1 Frankfurt | Heung-min Son 20'

20:22 , Matt Verri

TOTTENHAM RESPOND!

A tale as old as time. Kane drops deep, has space to turn and look up. He slides Son through with a perfect pass and it’s a ruthless finish.

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

20:21 , Matt Verri

A total shambles for Spurs. Dier’s touch was careless and loose, but he wasn’t helped by an unnecessarily firm pass by Romero.

Spurs looked like they wouldn’t score if they played all night in Germany last week, now they need two goals to win.

20:19 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Ndicka crunches into Emerson, strong challenge.

Spus man has stayed down, looks to be in a fair bit of pain. Frankfurt take pity on him and kick the ball out eventually.

GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Frankfurt | Daichi Kamada 14'

20:17 , Matt Verri

FRANKFURT TAKE THE LEAD!

Horor show at the back from Spurs, as Dier takes a heavy touch on the edge of his own box and gets robbed.

Played across the face of goal, Muani’s shot is saved. Falls for Rode, squares it to Kamada and he has a tap in.

20:14 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Kane fires a low ball in across the face of goal, Son waiting at the back post but it’s well cut out before it gets to him.

Frankfurt break on the left wing, Muani knocks the ball past Dier and gets taken out. Easy decision for the referee - yellow card for the defender.

20:12 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Emerson knocks the ball past Lenz and launches himself to the ground. Optimistic to say the least.

Bentancur has made a bright start for Spurs, he’s the one flying out of midfield to start the press.

20:09 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Despite that, Tottenham almost take the lead!

Sessegnon loops a cross into the box, Richarlison goes up with Trapp and wins the header well above the goalkeeper. Bobbles wide of the post.

20:08 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Spurs struggling to get out, Frankfurt pressing high up the pitch and pouncing on a couple of sloppy passes.

Confident start for the visitors - playing with plenty of ambition in the opening minutes.

20:05 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Sessegnon caught on the ball, stays down holding his face.

Frankfurt carry on, Kamada is completely free at the back post but the ball across the box has too much pace on it.

Real left-off for Spurs there.

20:04 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Richarlison brings the ball forward on the right, hammers a ball off the defender and behind for a corner.

Or not, goal-kick given. He’s not complaining too much so must have bounced back off the Brazilian.

KICK-OFF!

20:02 , Matt Verri

Up and running on a huge night in north London!

20:01 , Matt Verri

Minute’s applause held ahead of kick-off, in memory of both John Duncan and Gian Piero Ventrone.

Few Italian flags held up in the crowd too in tribute to Ventrone, who was so popular at the club.

Here we go...

Players are out onto the pitch in north London, full house as you’d expect.

Atmosphere will certainly deliver - up to the players now!

Not long now!

19:51 , Matt Verri

Kick-off coming up in less than ten minutes now, big night for Spurs as they look for a confidence-boosting win.

It’s been a stumbling run of form - chance to get back on track here.

Conte wants his attackers to turn up.

19:46 , Matt Verri

“Tonight we need to be more clinical.

“In this type of game, it’s important to take your chance when you get it.”

Conte’s update on Kulusevski fitness

19:32 , Matt Verri

“Deki [Kulusevski] is almost ready,” Conte told a pre-match press conference. “Yesterday, he had an MRI [scan] and the MRI was really, really positive. But I spoke with the doctors and they said tomorrow we can have five per cent risk.

“I don’t want to take risks because Deki is an important player for us and it’d be stupid to risk him and lose him for the rest of the nine games [before the World Cup].

“A bit of patience and we’ll face this situation without him in the best way. With Everton he’ll probably be available to play.”

How it stands

19:24 , Matt Verri

Sporting - 6

Tottenham - 4

Eintracht Frankfurt - 4

Marseille - 3

It’s still very much all to play for in Group D at the halfway stage. Victory for Spurs tonight and they’ll be in a strong position ahead of welcoming Sporting to north London.

Anything else though and things will start to become very nervy for Conte’s side.

Kane: Time to prove we’ve changed

19:17 , Matt Verri

Harry Kane has challenged his Tottenham team-mates to prove how they have matured under Antonio Conte in tonight’s Champions League clash.

Spurs have not been convincing on their return to the competition, beating Marseille at home only after the French side were reduced to 10 men, then losing at Sporting Lisbon and drawing 0-0 in Germany last week.

Kane has acknowledged that the pressure is on to step up under lights tonight and says it is time for the team to show their improved mentality since Conte took over.

“I think it’s changed a lot [under Conte], I think we’ve really tried to change the mentality of the club, not just the players, the whole club in general, and I think we’ve had a good impact on that,” said Kane. “We still have room to improve, for sure, in all departments. Antonio is a top, top coach.”

Not much to live up to tonight

18:41 , Matt Verri

For those who are really, really, really bored as we wait for the teams to be announced, here’s some ‘highlights’ of last week’s clash between the two sides in Frankfurt.

It finished goalless - Spurs will surely be more forceful in pushing for a win tonight on home soild.

Team news hint?

18:34 , Matt Verri

Richarlison will be desperate to start tonight, alongside Son and Kane. If it’s a 3-5-2 from Conte though, he’ll likely miss out again.

Not long until we find out what the Italian has opted for!

Conte’s trusted midfield duo

18:28 , Matt Verri

Tottenham’s 0-0 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt last week was summed up by a late passage of play which included one of the only moments of real individual quality.

In the 91st minute, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg spun away from an opponent on the edge of his own box and charged up the pitch on the break. The Dane passed to Harry Kane and kept going, but the striker’s return ball was wildly over-hit and another Spurs attack broke down.

Spurs’s wasteful front three was the story of a forgettable game but, while Kane, Heung-min Son and Richarlison all frustrated in Germany, Hojbjerg and midfield partner Rodrigo Bentancur were quietly assured. The pair were also the outstanding performers in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Brighton — this time aided by a third midfielder, in Yves Bissouma — and the former two are all but certain to keep their places tonight.

Minute’s silence to be held

18:19 , Matt Verri

Tottenham staff and players took part in a ceremony to create a permanent tribute to late fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone.

An Italian Evergreen Oak tree was planted at the club’s Hotspur Way training ground on Monday morning, with the club releasing an image of head coach Antonio Conte helping to lay the earth for the tribute.

A minute’s silence was also held in Ventrone’s memory after he tragically died at the age of 61 on Thursday.

More tributes will be paid in north London tonight ahead of kick-off, both to Ventrone and former Spurs forward John Duncan.

Prediction

18:11 , Matt Verri

Spurs’ change of formation against Brighton brought immediate improvement in midfield, and a great share of possession, to hand the Seagulls their first home defeat in nine months.

Antonio Conte will be tempted to stick with the same 3-5-2 shape against Frankfurt, and Spurs should have more than enough about them if they see more of the ball to beat the Germans and take a big step towards the knockout stages.

Spurs to win 2-0.

Visitors have arrived!

18:04 , Matt Verri

For those who want to feel sick on their Wednesday evening, Frankfurt’s media team have just the thing for you.

Frankfurt team news

17:58 , Matt Verri

For Frankfurt, Mario Gotze remains a doubt for the game with an ankle injury but Kristijan Jakic is back and fit.

The match will likely come too soon for Jerome Onguene, who is struggling with a hip complaint.

Tottenham team news

17:48 , Matt Verri

Tottenham forward Dejan Kulusevski will miss the game as he works to overcome a thigh injury, though Harry Kane has avoided injury to his ankle after a rough tackle against Brighton.

Lucas Moura will return to the substitutes’ bench after a spell out while Emerson Royal is available with his suspension only impacting domestic games.

A potential change in formation will be at the forefront of Antonio Conte’s thinking, with Richarlison potentially returning to the front three, alongside Heung-min Son and Kane.

A switch from the 3-5-2 used against Brighton to a 3-4-3 would make Yves Bissouma the likeliest midfielder to make way.

Predicted Tottenham XI (3-4-3): Lloris; Romero, Dier, Lenglet; Emerson, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Perisic; Richarlison, Kane, Son.
