Tottenham vs West Ham LIVE: Premier League result and reaction as Spurs run riot with Mohammed Kudus sent off
Tottenham responded to their “worst defeat” under Ange Postecoglou with a brilliant second half display to secure a 4-1 victory over West Ham at home.
In their first match since surrendering a two-goal lead against Brighton, Tottenham went behind at home versus the Hammers with Mohammed Kudus arriving at the back post to turn home a Jarrod Bowen pull back.
Spurs had been dominating possession and stepped up the tempo after going behind. Dejan Kulusevski was a bright spark and pulled the hosts level with an inside run and strike from the right wing.
1-1 was the half-time score and the match seemed like a close contest. The second half was anything but. Son Heung-min slipped a fine ball into the box for Destiny Udogie to set up Yves Bissouma’s goal before an unfortunate own goal extended Tottenham’s lead.
Having been involved in the previous two goals Son then drifted into space on the left and finished off a fine solo run to put the game out of West Ham’s reach. Kudus was visibly frustrated and let that show late in the game by collecting a red card.

How Ange Postecoglou’s pivotal James Maddison decision changed Tottenham’s direction
16:21 , Miguel Delaney, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Sometimes, well, you can actually change the players rather than the manager. At least for one match. In a game where both coaches were under some pressure, Ange Postecoglou was proactive with his own replacements, while Julen Lopetegui paid for his indecisiveness. The wonder is whether the Basque will even be at West Ham by the time Mohammed Kudus returns to the team, as the forward is facing at least a three-game ban, after one game here that visibly frustrated him.
His team were dismal in a 4-1 defeat that could have seen Tottenham score eight. As deserving as that would have been, the victory was still the tale of two subs - or really four. Spurs had been beginning to get on top towards the end of the first half, with Dejan Kulusevski having equalised Kudus’ own opening strike. There was still more that could be done, though, especially given that James Maddison had been quite ineffective. That was particularly so at corners.
Postecoglou decided to bring on Pape Matar Sarr for Maddison and Spurs almost immediately overran West Ham. Yves Bissouma had scored within minutes.

More from Lopetegui:
15:12 , Mike Jones
“The first is that we lost three points. The second is that we lost a derby and for that we are very sorry for our fans. The third is that if we want to be competitive in the Premier League we need to improve and we need to approach the bad moments with the right mentality.
“To overcome the situation and to become a better team and be able to win more matches. it is going to be a hard week for sure because we are frustrated today. But we have to look forward and be ready for the next match against Man Utd.
“I did not see the action back on tv [Kudus’ red card] but I think that if the referee reviewed it and decided that it was a red card then I cannot have a doubt. Maybe it is another point to improve, when we suffer in the bad moments we keep calm and fight to the end as a team.”
West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui speaking to BBC Match of the Day:
15:11 , Mike Jones
“First of all we are very disappointed for our fans. The summary is that they [Tottenham] deserved to win to be fair. We started well and we deserved to take the lead despite their two big chances. We defended well, attacked well and had more chances too
“In the second half we conceded the second goal in an action where we had many players in the box. We have to defend better in that moment as they are a team that make a lot of internal runs, which we knew, and we have to avoid that.
“After that was the bad moment in the match. It is normal that you can concede the second goal but then you cannot dismiss ten minutes, we lost all of our possibility to stay in the game and be competitive.”
Postecoglou on Maddison substitution:
14:58 , Mike Jones
“We needed more running power in midfield and Pape [Sarr] has lots of that, bags of energy and running. He really helped us to get control of the midfield and that gave us a good platform to go forward. Our general play improved from there and we looked dangerous going forward.”
Reaction from Ange Postecoglou
14:55 , Mike Jones
The Tottenham boss told Match of the Day: “We had to fight hard in the first half. Going a goal down wasn’t ideal but we clawed our way back into it, and it is not easy. West Ham are a big physical side and they have got some speed as well.
“Second half we were outstanding. We upped the tempo and played some quality football, defended when we needed to and got our finishing right.
“I think we had some chances where we could have scored more but if we keep creating the goals will come. We want to be that sort of side that creates lots of chances.”
More from Son Heung-min:
14:55 , Mike Jones
“[The support is] incredible, I have been missing this support for three weeks and I didn’t go to the national team. Playing in front of these fans is a huge honour and I want to give them something back.
“Sometimes injury time [out] can be good, we have such a busy time, that two or three weeks was perfect to recharge myself and today I was feeling really, really good.
“It’s entertaining [football under Postecoglou] but also a lot of pressure. The winger is expected to create chance and get goals. I think it is a lot of joy and pressure which is where we should be.”
Tottenham captain Son Heung-min speaking to TNT Sports:
14:54 , Mike Jones
“To be back on the pitch is a joy, playing with my team-mates in a beautiful stadium is one of my favourite things - especially when you get the result.
“When we conceded the first goal he [manager Ange Postecoglou] wasn’t very happy. He talked about protecting our goal like a home. But generally altogether with the performance I am very happy.
“When I get the ball I try and find the best solution. In a one-on-one situation I’m very on it and most like to be in this situation.
‘Sarr changed the game’ says Kulusevski
14:43 , Mike Jones
A potentially big call from Ange Postecoglou came at half-time when he replaced James Maddison with Pape Matar Sarr. Dejan Kulusevski thinks that was a turning point in the match as Spurs went on to score three more goals and win the game.
He said: “It’s hard to do both things [attack and defend] all the time and it was good to get Pape in, he changed the game for us.”
Post-match reaction from Kulusevski
14:42 , Mike Jones
Tottenham forward Dejan Kulusevski was awarded the Player of the Match and spoke to TNT Sports saying: “First half was tough because you cannot always be 100% physically. They did good and they scored but, when I scored, I knew we were going to win.
“When we play good we are unbelievable but we have to defend much better. The balance was not good enough, we have to improve that for the next game.
“When everything is clicking we can score four goals.”
Mohammed Kudus sent off after flooring three Tottenham players in wild meltdown
14:38 , Mike Jones
West Ham forward Mohammed Kudus was sent off after taking out three Tottenham players in a matter of seconds in an extraordinary meltdown in the London derby.

The Ghana international appeared to kick out twice at Micky van de Ven after the Spurs defender fell onto the ball, sparking the melee in which Kudus would lose his head.

Tottenham vs West Ham
12:25 , Mike Jones
The teams are waiting in the tunnel ahead of wlaking out onto the pitch at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Ange Postecoglou has named four forwards in his starting line-up with the creative James Maddison just behind them. Will this methodology work for Spurs today?
Let’s find out.
Antonio’s favourite team
12:20 , Mike Jones
Michail Antonio has scored six Premier League goals against Spurs, his highest tally against any club.
Leaky defences
12:15 , Mike Jones
West Ham’s only clean sheet in the last 25 top-flight matches came in a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace earlier this season. Meanwhile, Tottenham have kept just one clean sheet in 14 Premier League derbies under Ange Postecoglou.
Expect some goals in London today.
Will Maddison score?
12:10 , Mike Jones
James Maddison is one short of 50 Premier League goals. Can he reach that tally today?
Spurs’ slow start
12:05 , Mike Jones
Tottenham’s tally of 10 points from seven games is their lowest at this stage of a top-flight season since 2008-09 under Juande Ramos.
Ange Postecoglou will ‘do everything in my power’ to bring trophies to Tottenham
12:00 , Mike Jones
Ange Postecoglou has insisted it is not impossible to rid the club of its ‘Spursy’ tag and will accept it as his own failure if he cannot deliver trophy success for Tottenham.
A collapse at Brighton two weeks ago sparked more scrutiny on if there is a mental fragility at Spurs, which has been a historic criticism of the Premier League outfit due to a lack of silverware since 2008.
Parallels could be drawn between the public dressing down Postecoglou gave his squad after the loss and the memorable rant of predecessor Antonio Conte in his final fixture following a 3-3 draw at Southampton in 2023.
Ange Postecoglou will ‘do everything in my power’ to bring trophies to Tottenham
Postecoglou on bouncing back
11:58 , Mike Jones
Ange Postecoglou spoke to TNT Sports about his team bouncing back from their defeat to Brighton. He said: “The proof will be in the pudding. It is important that we reflect on that game in the way we should. It is not like it’s out of our reach if we replicate what we did in the first half.
“It is a great motivator as we know what a win will do four our fans. We need them behind us and we can get their energy going if we get a positive result today.”
Landmark appearance within reach for Cresswell
11:55 , Mike Jones
Aaron Cresswell could make his 500th league appearance this afternoon but Julen Lopetegui has tended to use him as an impact substitute this season.
If he reaches the landmark, expect it to be from the bench.
Tottenham’s key man?
11:50 , Mike Jones
Brennan Johnson has scored in seven consecutive matches for club and country.
Pre-match thoughts from Lopetegui
11:48 , Mike Jones
West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui spoke to TNT Sports saying: “We choose one line-up thinking from the last match. Fortunately we have many players who can stay in the line-up and today we have chosen this line-up.
“The past is the past. We play against a big team with big quality at home. We have to be ready with a good answer. It always means more if you get three points.
“We know this about the fans, but we put our focus on the pitch.”
Kilman on Ipswich win
11:35 , Mike Jones
Speaking about West Ham’s victory over Ipswich before the international break, Max Kilman said: “It was a dominant win, a really good performance, and it was good to get our first home win of the season. It’s given us a lot of confidence as a team, as players, and to the supporters too.
“A win like that can really help us build momentum. The Premier League is the toughest league in the world, and every team is very competitive whether it’s home or away, so it’s important to try and win as many games as possible and be as consistent as we can.
“There’s been ups and downs throughout the early season, but we’ve got a new manager, a new squad, and it’s going to take time, but we’re in a good position now and are getting stronger each week.
“We’re in a good position now and have been working really hard, and the understanding [of how the manager wants them to play] is getting there, so it’s a great time to go and play this weekend against Tottenham.”
Tottenham vs West Ham
11:30 , Mike Jones
West Ham are vying to win back-to-back league matches at Spurs for the first time since 1966.
They have won here on the last two visits with Jarrod Bowen and James Ward-Prowse overturning Cristian Romero’s opener in a 1-2 victory last December.
Before that the Hammers won 2-3 in July 2023 with Gianluca Scamacca netting the winner in the 78th minute.
Tottenham vs West Ham team changes
11:22 , Mike Jones
Ange Postecoglou makes two changes to the team that were defeated 3-2 by Brighton before the international break. Timo Werner and Rodrigo Bentancur are dropped with Son Heung-min and Yves Bissouma brought in.
For West Ham, Julen Lopetegui names the same starting XI that defeated Ipswich 4-1 last time out.

Good morning!
08:34 , Mike Jones
Welcome to The Independent’s coverage of today’s Premier League action. Saturday’s early kick off sees Tottenham host West Ham in a London derby that promises to be exciting and intense.
The Hammers defeated Spurs in their own back yard last season and come into the match with some new found confidence following a 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town.
Tottenham meanwhile suffered a disastrous 3-2 defeat to Brighton in their last match before the international break, squandering a two-goal advantage in the second half as the Seagulls emerged triumphant.
That sets the stage for today’s encounter and the question of who will come out on top.
We’ll have all the team news, line-ups and latest updates throughout the afternoon so stick with us as we build up to kick off at 12.30pm.
