Mathys Tel is closing in on a move to Tottenham Hotspur as they prepare to face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Thursday night. The 19-year-old is set to finalise a move to North London tonight after Spurs agreed a deal with Bayern Munich for his signature.

The Frenchman had initially snubbed a move to Tottenham last week after the Bundesliga giants had accepted a £50m bid from Ange Postecoglou's side. But after talks over a potential move to Manchester United broke down on Monday, Spurs moved swiftly to resurrect a deal for the Frenchman, who has made just two Bundesliga starts all season.

However, it now remains to be seen whether Tel will make only a straight loan move without the option to buy him permanently or whether Spurs can strike a late deal to include an option. The ECHO's sister site, football.london, understands that the final structure of the deal is not yet finalised, although reports in Germany are suggesting that Bayern are currently expecting it to be a straight loan.

However, should Tel's move go through, then he won't be able to make his debut against Liverpool at Anfield on Thursday night. That is because he missed the cut-off to be registered for the game, which was before the first-leg took place.

Spurs travel to Merseyside with a 1-0 lead from the first-leg in North London last month, though they face a Liverpool side that are top of the Premier League and have lost two games in all competitions this term.

Arne Slot, though, could be without Trent Alexander-Arnold for Thursday's second leg after the England international was withdrawn in the second half of Saturday's Premier League win at Brighton. The full-back was set to have a scan on the issue on Monday at the Reds' AXA Training Centre.
