Tractor Girls bow out of the FA Cup at the hands of WSL giants Man City
Ipswich Town Women bowed out of the FA Cup following a 3-0 loss to WSL giants Manchester City Women.
The first eight minutes were dominated by City, as expected, but Town defended really well to keep out the threats.
Town had a few opportunities going forward within the first 10. A short free kick to Sophie Peskett caught the City defence unawares but her low cross was cleared.
City started creating more chances 15 minutes in, but Town's defence remained strong. Megan Wearing blocked a potential goal scoring opportunity for Australia international Mary Fowler.
It took until the 20th minute before the deadlock was broken. O'Brien loses possession in the centre circle before City captain Jill Roord got the ball, taking aim from the edge of the 18-yard-area. Her shot nestled into the bottom right corner of the goal to give the WSL side the lead.
Lily Murphy almost made it two for City as her effort from just inside the area flew just over the crossbar.
The first half came to an end with Town 1-0 down to the team sitting second in the Women's Super League.
They'd defended well and broke when the opportunity presented itself.
City started the second half on the front foot, with a tempting cross just evading the foot of Kelly and Grace Prior turning a shot just wide of the post.
City scored their second in the 55th minute as Kelly's initial effort hit the crossbar, but Laura Coombs was there to meet the follow up and finish into an empty net.
City almost scored a third just three minutes later as Kelly fired a shot towards the near post but Natalia Negri was up well to turn the ball away behind for a corner.
It became hard for the Tractor Girls to get their foot on the ball as the WSL side kept pushing for a third goal.
In the 76th minute, Manchester City scored their third as substitute Vivianne Miedema returned to action and found herself with loads of space in the Town area. She took her time and struck the ball beyond Negri into the far corner of the goal.
Peskett showed some great determination in the 80th minute as she picked up the ball deep in her own half. She ran 50 yards on the ball before losing it but continued to apply pressure on the City goalkeeper.
Town debutant Lucy Watson ran onto a through ball from Peskett but her run was halted by a City defender who turned the ball behind for a corner which resulted in Manchester City clearing their lines.
The game ended 3-0 to the team two divisions above Town, but the Tractor Girls can be really proud of that performance.
They fought to the end, defended really well, broke when they got the chance and really impressed against a team boasting international talent.
