LEEDS United are showing an interest in Newcastle defender Matt Targett, with the Magpies unlikely to stand in the defender's way if a suitable offer arrives ahead of Monday's transfer deadline.

Targett has made just seven Premier League starts in two and a half seasons since making his loan move from Aston Villa permanent for £15m.

Lewis Hall has nailed down the starting spot at left-back this season, and boss Eddie Howe has Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier for cover if needs be.

Targett has endured some rotten injury luck during his time on Tyneside. He made his first start for 14 months in the FA Cup victory over Bromley a few weeks ago. That followed a nightmare spell, which started when he suffered a hamstring injury just five minutes into Newcastle's Carabao Cup win away at Manchester United in November 2023. He then suffered an Achilles injury before his return was further delayed at the start of this season by an eczema flare-up.

With Miguel Almiron set to complete his move to the MLS, Howe is reluctant to leave himself short but he is well covered at left-back. Targett has only played 12 Premier League minutes so far this season.

Leeds are now said to have been in touch with Newcastle to enquire about Targett.

Asked for a transfer update after his side's 0-0 draw with Burnley on Monday night, Leeds boss Daniel Farke said: "I have not checked my phone for the last six hours.

"I will check it after this press conference, perhaps I can tell you more in the next press conference."

Meanwhile, Juventus remain interested in Lloyd Kelly and Premier League clubs are also monitoring the defender's situation, but Howe last week said the defender is an "integral" figure in his squad. Howe says no bids have come close to tempting Newcastle to sell the former Bournemouth man this month.

One player is set to leave, however, with Jamie Miley poised to join Hartlepool United. Miley was recalled from his loan spell with Newport County earlier this month and is now set to join Pools on a permanent deal.
