Lazio chief pleased to have lost Mason Greenwood race

Thursday 1 August 2024 16:59 , Marc Mayo

Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani has explained why his club didn’t sign Mason Greenwood.

The former Manchester United striker joined Marseille last month after a year on loan at Getafe, having been told he could no longer play for United due to his much-publicised assault accusations. Greenwood denied them and police charges were dropped in 2023.

“We wanted Greenwood last year, then there was a hitch with the player - you all know what Greenwood’s problem was,” he told Lazio club media.

“An agent this year approached us with the idea of Greenwood moving to Italy. We gave him a deadline, from there an auction was unleashed and I thought I could go up to a certain limit.

“We offered £22m for 50 per cent of the player, we’re talking about €26m.

“He preferred to take another path and I say that the best deals are those that aren’t made. I want [Nicolo] Rovella, [Mattia] Zaccagni, players who love the environment where they work.

“I don’t want these mercenaries, it’s lucky not to make certain deals. I could sell myself for €50,000 more but I have values that my parents passed on to me.

“If he’s taken another path, we wish Greenwood the best of luck.”

Atletico launch Conor Gallagher charm offensive after Chelsea accept bid

Thursday 1 August 2024 10:03 , Alex Young

Atletico Madrid will dangle the carrot of helping Conor Gallagher advance his England career in bidding to convince the Chelsea star to trade Stamford Bridge for the Spanish capital, writes Nick Purewal.

Chelsea have accepted a £33million bid from Atletico for academy graduate Gallagher, and now the La Liga club will try to lure the 24-year-old away from his boyhood club. Atletico believe that handing Gallagher extensive La Liga and Champions League action will help him command a regular starting berth with England.

The Blues would prefer to sell Gallagher to an overseas side rather than a Premier League rival, so have agreed a fee falling below that of a bid from Aston Villa that was accepted earlier this summer. Gallagher rejected the Villa move, in addition to Chelsea's offer of a new contract that would keep him at Stamford Bridge beyond next summer.

The England midfielder has now entered the final year of his Chelsea deal, and could have a wider set of interested clubs on the table as a free agent next year. Chelsea have been prepared to sell Gallagher all summer however, and Tottenham had retained long-term interest but are not now expected to press for a deal.

Fulham open to Jay Stansfield U-turn

Wednesday 31 July 2024 17:00 , Marc Mayo

Fulham have not ruled out sending Jay Stansfield out on loan again this season, writes Dom Smith.

The 21-year-old striker scored 13 goals on loan last season with Birmingham — who wanted to sign him permanently afterwards — before returning to Fulham this summer. Manager Marco Silva said at the end of last season that he wanted the England Under-21 international to stay with Fulham for the 2024/25 campaign.

However, Standard Sport understands a decision on where he spends this season is yet to be made, with Fulham open to loaning Stansfield out again if an attractive enough proposal materialises.

A sale has also not been ruled out. While that is not Fulham’s desired outcome, any transfer fee would count as pure profit for accounting purposes, given he is an academy product.

Jurgen Klopp gives England job verdict

Wednesday 31 July 2024 16:15 , Marc Mayo

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has ruled himself out of the race to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager.

The 57-year-old German had been touted as an outsider for the post vacated by Southgate in the wake of England's Euro 2024 final defeat by Spain, but he has now distanced himself from the speculation.

Speaking at the International Coaches' Congress in Wurzburg, Klopp said when asked if there were any offers on the table: "At the moment, there is nothing at all in terms of jobs. No club, no country.

"A few people must not have heard this part. And it would be the biggest loss of face in the history of football if you said, 'I'll make an exception for you now'.

"I'm going to do some work. I'm too young to only do padel tennis and grandchildren. Will that be coach again? I would actually rule that out at the moment.

"Let's see what it will look like in a few months. Nothing is coming through at the moment."
