Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal loan Sterling, Chelsea sign Sancho but lose Osimhen after deadline

The transfer window faced a frantic conclusion as Premier League clubs scrambled to complete last-minute business up to – and after – the 11pm deadline.

Raheem Sterling has completed a season-long loan move from Chelsea to Arsenal. The clubs announced the switch almost three hours after the Premier League transfer window closed. Sterling, 29, has won 82 caps for England but had found himself frozen out at Chelsea under Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea wanted to sign a striker, but top option Victor Osimhen turned down their wage offer in favour of staying at Napoli, while Ivan Toney has moved to Saudi side Al-Ahli in a £40m transfer from Brentford.

Instead, Chelsea and Manchester United have agreed on a loan a deal for winger Jadon Sancho, who is expected to depart Old Trafford. United also finally finished off a move for PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte, after Scott McTominay was sold to Napoli.

Wolves signed a trio of players, Nottingham Forest captured James-Ward Prowse on loan, as Everton made a late move for Armando Broja from Chelsea and Fulham chased Reiss Nelson from Arsenal into the small hours.

Confirmed! Raheem Sterling signs for Arsenal

07:49 , Jamie Braidwood

Raheem Sterling swapped Chelsea for Arsenal in the most eye-catching move of the day, after the winger had been told he was surplus to requirements by Blues manager Enzo Maresca.

The Independent understands that the move was completed after a deal sheet was submitted to the Premier League on time. Sterling joins Arsenal on loan until the end of the season after the clubs agreed there would be no fee and that his vast wages would be shared between them. The move is a lot cheaper than Arsenal expected.

The winger escapes his Chelsea nightmare but still faces plenty of competition for a starting spot in the Arsenal team, with Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard already competing for a place on the left wing. Arsenal also wanted additional cover for Bukayo Saka.

The clubs announced the switch almost three hours after the Premier League transfer window closed.

Chelsea loan Sancho with obligation to buy

07:53 , Jamie Braidwood

In another of the more surprising developments over the past 48 hours, Chelsea loaned, and effectively bought, Jadon Sancho from Manchester United. Sancho’s move was also unconfirmed by the deadline but was widely reported to have been completed on time.

Sancho, 24, endured a troubled relationship with United manager Erik ten Hag and will get a fresh start at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea, the club he supported as a boy growing up in London. Chelsea are obliged to pay around £23m to sign Sancho permanently next summer, after he joined United from Dortmund three years ago for £73m.

Victor Osimhen latest: Chelsea move off as future hangs in balance

08:55 , Jamie Braidwood

Chelsea were unable to complete a late move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen last night after failing to agree terms with the player and club.

Osimhen now has three days to complete a move to Saudi side Al-Ahli, who have already purchased Ivan Toney for a fee of £40m.

The striker has been frozen out from Napoli’s first-team squad and reports in Italy suggest the relationship has completely broken down.

Birmingham smash League One transfer record for Stansfield

16:32 , Mike Jones

Birmingham City broke the League One transfer record to sign striker Jay Stansfield from Fulham.

The 21-year-old impressed on loan at St Andrew’s last season, scoring 13 goals, and the club have parted with £10m to bring him back as they bid for promotion to the Championship.

Celtic capture Engels from Augsburg

16:18 , Mike Jones

Celtic splashed £15m on 20-year-old midfielder Arne Engels from FC Augsburg on a four-year contract. Engels made 50 Bundesliga appearances over a season and a half at Augsburg.

“He has a wide range of attributes which will allow him to play a number of positions in midfield, so we feel he is an excellent acquisition for the club,” said Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers. “I think Arne’s style of play, his energy and his technical ability really will suit our game model.”

Leicester confirm Odsonne Edouard loan

16:03 , Mike Jones

Leicester have signed striker Odsonne Edouard on loan from Crystal Palace for the rest of the season.

“I can’t wait to get started,” the 26-year-old said. “I’m really excited to be joining a team like Leicester City and to do what I can to help the team in the Premier League this season.

“There’s a fantastic squad here and I’m confident that the team has what it takes to be successful. I’ll be working hard to make sure I do everything I can to support my team and to show the fans what I can do on the pitch.”

Mikel Arteta details relationship he has already built with new Arsenal loanee Raheem Sterling

15:49 , Mike Jones

Mikel Arteta detailed his relationship with Raheem Sterling in a recent press conference, suggesting their time together at Manchester City was “exceptional”.

The England winger, 29, joined Arsenal in a surprise deadline day loan move from Chelsea, meaning he will link up with Arteta once again.

Last week, the Spanish coach was quizzed about Sterling by reporters.

“He was unbelievable at the time we worked together, and he taught me a lot as well about individuals, how players think and how we give them support and help them,” Arteta said.

“He’s someone I have really strong feelings about.”

Erik ten Hag and Arne Slot were never friends – and they’re about to become enemies

15:36 , Mike Jones

They are not friends, according to Arne Slot. “Friends is someone you see a lot and go out with for dinner with,” said the Liverpool manager. Erik ten Hag does not belong in that category. Their relationship, Slot claimed, is as “good and normal as with other managers”. But a rivalry has been renewed; it may not be personal between them, but it tends to be between their clubs.

They have been at the two biggest teams in their native Netherlands; now they are at the two most successful ever in England. It was Ajax against Feyenoord. Now it Manchester United versus Liverpool.

Ten Hag is both the more established and the man whose position has been in greater peril. He has won two trophies in England. He had to wait a couple of weeks after the second, May’s FA Cup, to discover he wasn’t being dismissed. United forever feel a work in progress, while regressing last season to their lowest-ever Premier League finish.

Chelsea agree deal for Sancho loan move

15:22 , Mike Jones

Chelsea have signed Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho on loan until the end of the season.

The deal includes an obligation for Chelsea to sign the England international, 24, for up to £25m next summer. Sancho made 83 appearances across the three full seasons but had a high-profile falling out with manager Erik ten Hag.

The last of his 23 England caps came back in 2021, having been overlooked for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in 2022 and Euro 2024.

The club have not yet confirmed the transfer as Chelsea needed a deal sheet to extend the deadline for the move to get over the line.

Virgil van Dijk reflects on Liverpool career after entering final year of contract

15:08 , Mike Jones

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is enjoying life under Arne Slot and relishing his role of being the link between the new head coach and the rest of the squad.

The Netherlands international, 33, has had a key role to play in a summer of upheaval at Anfield after the departure of long-time manager Jurgen Klopp and his entire backroom staff.

Speculation about Van Dijk’s future is also increasing by the week as he is in the final year of his contract, with a new deal yet to be finalised.

But the Dutchman does not see age as being any sort of barrier to his ability to continue to perform at the highest level.

14:52 , Mike Jones

Manchester United have landed their top midfield target this summer by completing the signing of Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain for an initial £42.3m.

The Uruguay international, whose fee could rise by a further £8.5m if add-ons are triggered, has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford after passing a medical.

He joined as Scott McTominay ended his 22-year association with United by moving to Napoli for £25.7m, with the FA Cup winners also having a 10 percent sell-on clause.

Ange Postecoglou hails ‘positive window’ as Tottenham

14:36 , Mike Jones

Ange Postecoglou has declared himself happy with his current Tottenham squad and believes it has been a positive transfer window for the club.

Spurs are set for a quiet deadline day with outgoings the priority after a summer where Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Wilson Odobert and Dominic Solanke have arrived.

“Unless something surprising jumps out at us in the last 11 hours or whatever it is, that’s it for us,” the Spurs boss confirmed ahead of Sunday’s trip to Newcastle.

“If nothing else happens, there’s a couple probably moving out, I think it’s been another positive window. You want to go into every window and come out the other side of it in a stronger sense and I certainly feel that.

“The players we’ve brought in are already making a short-term impact and even in the longer term, I think they’re going to be really good contributors for us.

“I certainly think we’ve got a more well-rounded squad to deal with Europe, the extra games and whatever injuries we have. So yeah, I think it’s been a real positive window.

“I’m very happy. We’ve done a hell of a lot of work in 12 months, three windows. No doubts the squad’s changed. The demographic of the squad has changed, the suitability to the football I want to play, we’re much better equipped for that. There’s growth in the team, absolutely.

“We needed to do some fairly major work 12 months ago and since then we’ve gone a long way to getting the team to where we want to.

“There’s still more work to be done. It was never going to happen quickly. I don’t think it should happen quickly. When it does happen quickly, you’re more fraught to getting it wrong. So I think we’re in a good place.”

No issues in Sancho deal

14:22 , Mike Jones

Chelsea are yet to announce the signing of Jadon Sancho but Fabrizio Romano reports that there are no issues with the deal and that the winger is now a Chelsea player.

We’ll await confirmation from the club which should come at some point this weekend.

Why was Declan Rice sent off against Brighton?

14:13 , Mike Jones

Declan Rice was dismissed from Arsenal’s Premier League match against Brighton after kicking the ball away as Joel Veltman was about to take a free kick for the visitors.

Kai Havertz’s opening goal had sent the Gunners into the lead and the score was 1-0 when Rice was shown the red card early in the second half.

Rice had previously arrived late with a tackle on Veltman in the first half which saw him clip the defender’s leg and earn a first yellow of the match.

Palace buy striker Nketiah and defender Lacroix – and keep Guehi

Eddie Nketiah completed his move away from Arsenal with a £25m switch to Crystal Palace.

Nketiah, 25, had fallen down the pecking order behind Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus at the top of Arsenal’s attack and had become surplus to requirements for Mikel Arteta.

He will compete for a starting spot with Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta after signing a five-year contract. Odsonne Edouard meanwhile departed Selhurst Park for Leicester City on loan.

It came after Palace bought centre-back Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg earlier in the day. Lacroix’s move reunites the 24-year-old French player with Palace manager Oliver Glasner, who coached Wolfsburg for two seasons.

Lacroix effectively replaces Joachim Andersen in the team after the Denmark international joined Fulham last week. And he will be paired with Marc Guehi after Palace refused to sell the England defender, who Newcastle had pursued all month.

Palace also loaned Chelsea defender Trevor Chalobah, with a deal sheet submitted before 11pm.

“McTominay will be missed by everyone at the club and leaves with our best wishes as he embarks on a new chapter of his career in Italy,” Manchester United said in a statement.

McTominay was Napoli’s second major signing from the Premier League this week, with striker Romelu Lukaku joining from Chelsea on Thursday.

Manchester United land Ugarte for initial £42m

Manchester United landed their top midfield target this summer by completing the signing of Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain for an initial £42.3m.

The Uruguay international, whose fee could rise by a further £8.5m if add-ons are triggered, has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford after passing a medical.

United had prioritised the recruitment of a defensive midfielder and, over the last two seasons, Ugarte averaged the second most tackles per 90 minutes in Europe’s five major leagues. They believe the 23-year-old is one of the best young midfielders in world football and noted he was named in the team of the tournament in the summer’s Copa America.

“The passion of supporters is something that is very important to me,” Ugarte said. “I know how incredible United fans are and I cannot wait to experience Old Trafford. Manchester City not replacing Julian Alvarez could be mistake, Guardiola says

12:32 , Mike Jones

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola admitted the club have taken a risk by not moving to replace Julian Alvarez in the transfer market but insisted he has more than enough options in attack.

It has been a quiet summer for the Premier League champions, with the return of Ilkay Gundogan and the signing of Savinho the only incomings, while James McAtee has joined the first-team squad after spending the last two seasons on loan at Sheffield United.

Alvarez, meanwhile, departed for Atletico Madrid earlier this month.

“Manuel is a player we’ve watched closely, and we are excited to see the positive impact he will make on the pitch and in the dressing room as we continue to strive for success.”

Ashworth also praised the Uruguayan’s “excellent record at both club and international level”.

On the 27th August Arsenal signed a breakout star from Euro 2024 in Spain’s Mikel Merino. He arrived from Real Sociedad for a fee that could reach £31.6m and will bolster the midfield ahead of a testing Premier League campaign.

Two days later on the 29th August, Merino injures his shoulder during his first training session with the Gunners and is now on the sidelines for a “few weeks”.

Billy Gilmour completes move from Brighton to Napoli

11:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Brighton sold midfielder Billy Gilmour to Napoli last night for an initial £12m. The Scotland international made 60 appearances for Brighton in two seasons at the club, following a move from Chelsea in 2022.

The move appeared to be off after Brighton’s new £25m midfielder Matt O’Riley suffered a ankle injury just 10 minutes into his debut, but the Italian club persisted and got the deal over the line with hours to spare.

Brighton’s technical director David Weir said, “Billy quickly established himself as a popular figure in the dressing room and was a key player last season when we competed in the Europa League for the first time.

“We wish him the best of luck with this move to Italy and thank him for his efforts with the club.”

Arsenal have to be ‘proud’ of transfer business, says Edu

10:41 , Jamie Braidwood

It was a busy end to the transfer window for Arsenal with the club selling striker Eddie Nketiah to Crystal Palace, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to Southampton and loaning Reiss Nelson to Fulham.

In the same window, the Gunners also sold Emile Smith Rowe on a permanent deal and signed Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori and Sain midfielder Mikel Merino, while bringing in Raheem Sterling and Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto on loan.

Sporting director Edu said: “A long day, a long transfer window but in the end, I think we as a club have to be proud once again. The way we are working together, the way we did all the deals.

“I think we are in a very good situation when see all the loan players in the right clubs. You see the signings we have like Riccardo and like Merino, so the players that we planned to sign, our targets, they are here. Also the players that we decided to sell, I think we sold them for the right price, to the right clubs, in the right way also which is important.

“So today to be here on the last day of the transfer window, to get someone like Sterling, who I believe will be someone very important for the squad, who is going to give a lot to the team. So it’s a pleasure, and in the end everyone – not only me because there are a lot of people working here as well – but it’s a pleasure we are finishing the transfer window.”

Raheem Sterling loan ‘makes sense’ for Arsenal - Edu

10:07 , Jamie Braidwood

Arsenal’s sporting director Edu explains why the club made a late move in the transfer window to sign Raheem Sterling on loan.

“To be fair we never planned really to sign him when we started the transfer window, just to be very transparent, for different reasons.

“But we always say to everyone that you have to be prepared for every single scenario. So when that opportunity came to me, and I checked the squad, I checked how he plays, and spoke to Mikel [Arteta] of course. I spoke to Tim [Lewis], our vice-chairman, to check if everyone is comfortable for the step we are going to take, and it makes a lot of sense.

“It makes a lot of sense to have someone like him because I’m pretty sure he is going to add a lot in the squad. He has experience, he understands more than anyone the league, he’s played in the Champions League many times.

“He won the Premier League a few times as well, so I think he can add a lot to our squad and I feel really happy to see someone like him in our squad.”

Forbs only broke into the Ajax first team last season but made an impression on watching scouts, and he knows English football after spending several years in Manchester City’s academy. He joined on loan, and Wolves have an £11m option to buy.

Johnstone signed a four-year contract and looks set to usurp Jose Sa as Wolves’ No 1 goalkeeper.

To make room, striker Fabio Silva joined Spanish side Las Palmas on a season-long loan, while winger Chiquinho also left for Mallorca on loan.

It was my team in Brazil, where I grew up and became a professional footballer, and also Arsenal. And now I’m realising it. I’m a really lucky person.”

It seems like a pretty good deal for all parties, though whether Sterling will get significant game time, up against Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard for a place on the left wing, remains to be seen.

Why are Chelsea signing Sancho?

Friday 30 August 2024 22:30 , Chris Wilson

Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol offers an interesting insight into why Chelsea want Jadon Sancho.

“I know it will come as a surprise to Chelsea fans who will be scratching their heads thinking, ‘do we need Jadon Sancho?’ with so many wide players already.

“What it seemed they needed really was an out-and-out No 9. Well they haven’t got the No. 9 but they will almost certainly now be signing Jadon Sancho.

“The reason they have gone for Sancho is that it was too good a deal to turn down.

“There are people here at Chelsea who used to work with Sancho at Manchester City. They believe that while he has had problems at Manchester United, they believe that with a fresh start, they can bring the best out of him.

“Three years ago, Sancho was a player who moved from Borussia Dortmund to United for a fee of around £85m.

“They feel it is a risk worth taking and that he can get back to his best at Stamford Bridge this season, but of course he is going to have a fight on his hands to get into the side because they’ve got so many wide players.”
