Transfer news LIVE! Deadline day done deals and reaction as Tel and Gonzalez move and Chelsea axe four
Transfer deadline day came to an end last night as Premier League clubs faced a frantic few hours to complete last-minute January deals before the window shut at 11pm.
Mathys Tel provided a huge deadline day twist as he reversed his decision not to join Tottenham. Spurs agreed a £50.2m permanent deal for 19-year-old Tel last week but the player didn’t want to join the north London club, with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea fc and Manchester United – who were on the hunt for a new forward after Marcus Rashford joined Aston Villa on loan but ultimately stood pat for financial reasons – also interested.
However, a long chat with Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou caused Tel to U-turn today and he joined the club for the second half of the season, while the deal includes the option to make the transfer permanent in the summer.
Elsewhere, Manchester City’s flaws were exposed by Arsenal in a 5-1 defeat over the weekend and Pep Guardiola’s side signed defensive midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Porto for £49m as a long-overdue Rodri replacement.
Aston Villa signed three-time Champions League winner Marco Asensio on loan from PSG until the end of the season and Villa were also set to confirm the loan signing of Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi late on Monday evening. There was plenty of other transfer news involving the Blues as Joao Felix was set to exit Stamford Bridge for AC Milan after Ben Chilwell did exactly that to Crystal Palace and Carney Chukwuemeka headed for Borussia Dortmund.
Re-live all the deadline day action in our live blog below:

The two reasons behind Arsenal and Man Utd's frustrating January transfer window
15:58 , Lawrence Ostlere
The top clubs largely resisted the sort of excess spending that has characterised past windows, while middle-class sides like Aston Villa are closing the gap:
Which deals didn’t happen on deadline day?
15:14 , Lawrence Ostlere
Sticking with Villa, Leon Bailey is another player who will stay at Villa Park, despite the club’s proliferation of attacking options.
Andrea Cambiaso was a name that had been linked to Manchester City over the days preceding the end of the window, but it seems that City’s attention became even more focused on Nico Gonzalez after the weekend result. Douglas Luiz was another player who stayed in Italy despite rumoured interest from City.
As with every window nowadays, there was plenty of action at Chelsea this month, though one player who will stay at the Bridge – at least for now – is Christopher Nkunku, after the Frenchman was a target for clubs including Man Utd and Bayern Munich.
Which deals didn’t happen on deadline day?
14:44 , Lawrence Ostlere
There were a number of potential moves that failed to materialise into anything concrete over the last few days.
Perhaps most notably, Alejandro Garnacho ends the month at Manchester United, despite strong links between the Argentine and both Chelsea and Napoli.
Somewhat surprisingly, both Arsenal and United failed to get a deal done for Mathys Tel, despite early reports that the Frenchman had favoured a move to Manchester, as Tottenham swooped.
Arsenal’s move for Ollie Watkins was another notable deal that never turned into a last-gap deadline day bid, and the England man will stay at Aston Villa (for the near future at least).

13:04 , Lawrence Ostlere
Sunderland have confirmed they clinched a loan move for 19-year-old striker Jayden Danns before Monday night's 11pm transfer deadline after he had signed a new long-term deal at Liverpool.
The teenager, who made his first start and maiden Champions League appearance for the Anfield club at PSV Eindhoven last week, will join up with the Black Cats after completing his rehabilitation from a back injury identified during his medical and spend the remainder of the season at the Stadium of Light.
Danns told the club's official website: "This is my first loan move and a chance to prove myself, so I'm very appreciative of the opportunity and I'm grateful to the club for placing their faith in me.
"I've done my research and the team is incredible, so this feels like the right step.
"I'm disappointed that I will be unable to do that straight away, but I'm proud to have joined the club and I will work hard throughout this period to ensure I can return to action and play my part."
Liverpool announced the move as they confirmed Danns' new deal.
They said in a statement on their official website: "Jayden Danns has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool and will join Sunderland on loan until the end of the season."

11:21 , Lawrence Ostlere
The West Ham midfielder was recalled from his loan at Nottingham Forest as Graham Potter has plans to use him this season.

Deadline day transfers: Willian
10:28 , Lawrence Ostlere
The deal to bring the Brazilian back to Craven Cottage was one of the late surprises of the window, with Fulham having been looking at wingers due to an injury to Harry Wilson. The 36-year-old has agreed a deal in principle, having been a free agent since leaving Olympiacos in December.
Deadline day transfers: Mathis Amougo
10:15 , Lawrence Ostlere
The French defender was a surprise late signing from Chelsea, who agreed a deal with St Etienne for around £12m.
Deadline day transfers: Ben Chilwell
09:59 , Lawrence Ostlere
Chilwell was originally tipped for a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer, but the former England international finally agreed a deal on the final day of the January window, moving to Crystal Palace on loan with no option or obligation to buy.
Deadline day transfers: Carney Chukwuemeka
09:44 , Lawrence Ostlere
The Chelsea midfielder joined Borussia Dortmund on loan on deadline day, and the deal does include an option to purchase the 21-year-old at the end of the season for a fee around £40m.
Deadline day transfers: Joao Felix
09:32 , Lawrence Ostlere
The Portuguese was reportedly the target of plenty of interest from sides around Europe, and he got his move eventually as he signed for AC Milan on loan. The deal is a loan until the end of the season, with a £5m loan fee and Milan covering his wages.
Deadline day transfers: Axel Disasi
09:10 , Lawrence Ostlere
Disasi’s mistakes eventually cost him his place at Chelsea, and despite interest from Spurs, the Frenchman ended up signing for Aston Villa on loan. Villa will pay a £5m loan fee for the defender, and will pay his wages.

09:01 , Lawrence Ostlere
Manchester City made the biggest permanent signing of the day, as they agreed a deal to sign Porto’s Gonzalez for around £49m. The Spanish midfielder is just 23 years old, but signed ahead of reported City target Douglas Luiz.
Deadline day transfers: Mathys Tel
08:33 , Lawrence Ostlere

Every transfer that happened on deadline day – and seven that didn't
08:26 , Lawrence Ostlere
While the difficulty of making signings in the winter often makes the January transfer window a less exciting affair than its summer counterpart, there was plenty of action on deadline day before the window closed at 11pm.
Several Premier League clubs spent the final hours of the day attempting to recruit new players, whether it was an injury-hit Tottenham desperately looking for a new defender or Manchester City seeking a quick fix to the midfield problems that were so cruelly exposed in the 5-1 loss to Arsenal.
There were even a couple of dramatic twists, as Mathys Tel decided on a move to Spurs and Willian agreed on a return to Fulham, though some fans were left disappointed as deals failed to materialise.
The Independent takes a look at every Premier League move that happened on deadline day – as well as a few high-profile deals that didn’t.
Outstanding deals still to be confirmed
00:26 , Luke Baker
Right, that should just about wrap things up for our deadline day live blog.
There are just a couple of deals left to be confirmed that you can look out for when you get up in the morning.
Joao Felix should be heading to AC Milan on loan from Chelsea and Axel Disasi may also be temporarily leaving Stamford Bridge for Aston Villa. The clubs had until 1am to get those moves confirmed, provided they submitted the deal sheet before 11pm to be granted the extension.
Oh, and Fulham may re-sign 36-year-old Willian on Tuesday after he was released by Olympiakos at the end of December. What a time to be alive...
Thanks for joining us - catch you on the flip side.
DONE DEAL! Everton get Carlos Alcaraz deal over the line
00:23 , Luke Baker
The deal sheet worked! Everton used the extra time to ensure the move for Carlos Alcaraz (not the tennis one...) got over the line.
The Argentine midfielder heads to Goodison Park on loan from Brazilian side Flamengo for the rest of the 2024/25 campaign, with an option to buy at the end of the season.
The 22-year-old spent two seasons at Southampton before joining Juventus on loan last term and then signing for Flamengo in August.
“I am very happy to join Everton, such a great club, with a very good fanbase,” said Alcaraz. “I am ready for any challenge with this beautiful club so that's why I came and accepted the offer to keep fighting for my dreams. I want to tell the fans that whenever I wear this shirt, I will give my best, I will give everything I have to take Everton to the top, which is where they deserve to be.”

The 22-year-old Burkina Faso international should provide some defensive depth for Wolves as they battle relegation
Everton sign deal sheet for Carlos Alcaraz
Monday 3 February 2025 23:56 , Luke Baker
Everton have submitted the dreaded deal sheet for Carlos Alcaraz.
The 22-year-old midfielder from Flamengo has completed a medical ahead of a proposed loan move but more time is needed to ratify things with the Premier League, hence the deal sheet.
Alcaraz spent two seasons at Southampton before joining Juventus on loan last term and then signing for Brazilian side Flamengo in August.
DONE DEAL! Jeffrey Schlupp joins Celtic
Monday 3 February 2025 23:24 , Luke Baker
Some more Palace news, going in the other direction, with Jeffrey Schlupp officially joining Scottish champions Celtic on loan.

He has also been capped 20 times for Ghana throughout his career.

Monday 3 February 2025 23:22 , Luke Baker
The deals are coming thick and fast now. Crystal Palace have confirmed the signing of Ben Chilwell on loan from Chelsea.
The 28-year-old left-back joins the Eagles until the end of the season after being frozen out at Chelsea and he’ll hope to resurrect his England career at Selhurst Park.
Chilwell said: “I'm very excited to be here. Crystal Palace is a club that's going in a great direction. You look at the last few months, with the results and how the team's playing, and it was a no-brainer to make the decision to come here.”

Monday 3 February 2025 23:14 , Luke Baker
Manchester City have taken their spending in the winter transfer window to £172m by bringing in Nico Gonzalez from Porto for £49m.
The Premier League champions, who have been the biggest spenders of the window, belatedly signed a midfielder just before the deadline by buying the 23-year-old Spaniard.

Monday 3 February 2025 23:00 , Luke Baker
Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has joined Belgian side Standard Liege on loan.
The 22-year-old Ireland international hasn’t featured this season after making 41 appearances in the Saints’ promotion campaign to the Premier League.
That is largely because he has spent nine months on the sidelines with an Achilles injury and will now join Liege until the end of the season

Moves we're expecting to be completed ahead of the deadline
Monday 3 February 2025 22:34 , Luke Baker
Ok, let’s take stock here. With just under 30 minutes to go until the 11pm deadline, which deals are we expecting to be confirmed and completed (or confirmed after the deadline but with the ridiculous ‘deal sheet’ having been completed pre-11pm)?
Mathys Tel should complete his loan move (with an option to buy) from Bayern Munich to Tottenham after a dramatic change of heart earlier today
Man City are set to sign defensive midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Porto for £50m as a Rodri replacement

Joao Felix lands in Italy for for AC Milan move
Monday 3 February 2025 22:22 , Luke Baker
Video has emerged of Joao Felix at Milan airport as he prepares to seal his move to AC Milan.
He’s largely been an entirely pointless signing by Chelsea having signed a seven-year contract when signing from Atletico Madrid in a £45m deal last August.
Milan are paying his wages and a £5m loan fee until the end of the season. Official confirmation imminent.

Willian agrees deal in principle with Fulham
Monday 3 February 2025 22:13 , Luke Baker
The slightly left-field news of 36-year-old Willian returning to Fulham is just about over the line.
Sky Sports News' Dharmesh Sheth is reporting that the Cottagers have agreed a deal in principle to re-sign the Brazilian forward after he was released by Olympiakos at the end of December.
As he’s a free agent, he’s not subject to the same 11pm deadline as players still at their clubs, so a formal announcement is expected tomorrow.

Monday 3 February 2025 22:04 , Luke Baker
Rob Holding has completed his loan move to Sheffield United from Crystal Palace.

“It is a fresh start, I'm looking for a bit of consistency with games and see what happens in the second half of the season.”

Fulham eyeing shock Willian return
Monday 3 February 2025 21:39 , Luke Baker
He’s the man who just can’t stay away. Willian, at the age of 104, could be returning to the Premier League with Fulham.
I exaggerate a little bit, he’s only 36, but he left Fulham in the summer to join Olympiakos and it appeared his Premier League career was over. He left Olympiakos in December and now the Cottagers appear set to bring him back to add depth to their squad.
Remarkable scenes and surely a divisive at best move among the Fulham fanbase in terms of the ambition (or lack thereof) it shows.
Mathys Tel deal to include option to buy
Monday 3 February 2025 21:28 , Luke Baker
An update on the Mathys Tel deal. The Bayern Munich youngster had an abrupt change of heart earlier today, choosing to join Tottenham on loan having earlier rejected them.

Tel is in London ahead of the move being sealed before the 11pm deadline.

Nico Gonzalez on the brink of Man City move
Monday 3 February 2025 20:44 , Luke Baker
Man City have been the busiest Premier League team in this transfer window and they’re adding one more player before all is said and done.
They’ve been trying to replace Rodri ever since his ACL injury earlier in the season and have settled on Porto’s defensive midfielder Nico Gonzalez.
Gonzalez will be signed on a £50m deal. He has been undergoing a medical in Portugal and that seems to have gone by the book, so official confirmation will be coming shortly.

Monday 3 February 2025 20:34 , Luke Baker

Axel Disasi earns Aston Villa move
Monday 3 February 2025 20:20 , Luke Baker
The Axel Disasi saga looks set to reach its conclusion as the Chelsea defender will be heading on loan to Aston Villa.
Disasi had been heavily linked with Spurs, who are in dire need of a centre-back given their extensive injuries, but the 26-year-old had no desire to join Ange Postecoglou’s men.
Villa have matched the £5m loan fee offered by Spurs and the deal is a move until the end of the season with his salary covered. There is no buy option included.
Official confirmation expected shortly.

Update on Man Utd's deadline day plans
Monday 3 February 2025 19:21 , Luke Baker
The Independent’s Senior Football Correspondent Richard Jolly reports that no further incomings are expected for Manchester United tonight.
That means there will be no striker signed, which will surely frustrate Red Devils fans.
United have little leeway within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and would rather give themselves more scope to spend in the summer.
