Travis Kelce loves the Kansas City Chiefs being the 'villains' of the NFL
The Kansas City Chiefs are on the cusp of history. They have a chance to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls. With a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, this Chiefs team would take its place among the greatest sports dynasties.
Their Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers last year made the Chiefs the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots. No back-to-back winner has even made it to a third consecutive Super Bowl prior to Kansas City this season.
This is the Chiefs' fifth Super Bowl appearance in the last six seasons. The one year in which they didn't make it – Super Bowl 56 in 2022 – they were just one win away with a loss in the AFC championship game to the Cincinnati Bengals.
NFL's most hated? Chiefs are stirring plenty of contempt in Super Bowl three-peat push
This level of metronomic postseason success has soured football and turned the Chiefs into the most disliked team in the NFL entering the season, and star tight end Travis Kelce is leaning into it ahead of Super Bowl 59.
"Do you guys enjoy being the villains of the NFL?" Kelce's brother, Jason, asked him during Wednesday's episode of the "New Heights" podcast.
"I love it," Travis said. "At one point in time it wasn't that. I was the 'do you feel bad for him' guys."
"You're now the heel," Jason added.
Team or family? Jason Kelce reveals who he's rooting for in Super Bowl 59
"I'm enjoying doing this with the guys together, the guys that we have in there," Travis said. "It just makes us even more of a family. You just circle the wagons ... people are saying whatever they want and you just banded together and it just makes you appreciate more of what you have."
Fans and media have criticized how the Chiefs' first two playoff games this season were officiated. ESPN analyst Troy Aikman remarked on a hit on Mahomes in the Chiefs' game against the Texans and a fourth-down ball spot for the Buffalo Bills in the AFC championship game was another major point of contention.
Chiefs playoff record
Kansas City has enjoyed more playoff success with quarterback Patrick Mahomes than any other time in franchise history. They've gone 16-3 with Mahomes as the starting quarterback compared to 9-18 in the franchise's 58 years before he took over.
Kansas City has won four Super Bowls overall, including three in the last five years. The Chiefs are 3-1 in the Super Bowl with Mahomes.
The Chiefs broke their 50-year Super Bowl drought in the 2019 season with a 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54. They then lost the Super Bowl in the following season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-9.
After missing the Super Bowl in the 2021 season, Kansas City returned for Super Bowl 57 against the Philadelphia Eagles and won 38-35. The Chiefs then became the first team since 2004 to win back-to-back Super Bowls with a 25-22 win over the 49ers in Super Bowl 58.
