Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to undergo a scan on Monday to discover the severity of the thigh problem that forced him out of Liverpool's win against Bournemouth on Saturday. The vice-captain pulled up midway through the second half of the game at the Vitality Stadium and was replaced by Conor Bradley.

Reds boss Arne Slot confirmed in his post-match press conference that the right-back had asked to be brought off rather than risk aggravating the issue further.

Liverpool had Sunday off following their exploits on the south coast on Saturday afternoon, meaning Alexander-Arnold has yet to undergo any tests to establish how bad the injury is. However, there is confidence that the England international won't be subjected to a lengthy lay-off ahead of the club learning more on Monday afternoon.

Slot admitted he would be surprised if Alexander-Arnold was declared fit for Thursday's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, saying: “The situation is he said to me that you have to take me off and he sat on the floor and we took him off.

"He felt something, I can’t tell you exactly what it was and how bad it is as we are (talking now) only just after the game. But it’s never a good sign if a player is asking for a substitution. It’s not a fact but I would be surprised if he plays on Thursday. Let’s hope he is back with us as soon as possible.”

Liverpool are not in Premier League action until February 12 when they travel to Everton for the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park and while Alexander-Arnold is an injury doubt for Thursday's game with Spurs, he was always unlikely to feature in the fourth-round FA Cup tie against Plymouth Argyle on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Reds are not expecting any late move from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day for Alexander-Arnold after the Champions League holders had an approach rejected late last month.

The 26-year-old is out of contract at the end of the campaign and can speak to clubs outside of England about moving as a free agent this summer but Madrid made advances on New Year's Eve only to be immediately rebuffed.

Reports in Madrid-based publication Marca last week claimed Real were resigned to defeat in their January pursuit of the West Derby-born Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool are not anticipating a second approach from the La Liga giants.

Los Blancos, however, remain keen on trying to bring him to the Spanish capital on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.
