Trent Alexander-Arnold 'probably hated' Liverpool team-mate who became training 'sparring partner'
Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘probably hated’ one of his former Liverpool team-mates, according to one of the Reds’ longest-serving coaches. The England international is already an established club legend, having won every major honour since making his debut back in 2016.
The 26-year-old has made 336 appearances for Liverpool to date, returning 21 goals and 84 assists. However, his Anfield future is uncertain beyond the end of the season with his current contract set to expire this summer.
Attracting interest from Real Madrid, the La Liga giants have already had an approach for rejected by the Reds. But now free to sign a pre-contract agreement with clubs, that would not stop the defender from moving on on a free transfer.

Scoring a spectacular 25-yard strike when captaining Liverpool in their 4-0 victory over Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup on Saturday, Alexander-Arnold was immediately serenaded by a rendition of ‘The Scouser in our Team,’ by Anfield. Meanwhile, withdrawn on the hour-mark, he was given a standing ovation as he applauded all four corners of the stadium.
But while Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool future remains uncertain, a former team-mate that he allegedly hated has recently completed a January transfer of his own.
Bobby Adekanye joined Turkish side Amedspor from Go Ahead Eagles last week, following two and a half years with the Dutch outfit. He made 81 appearances, scoring seven goals and recording 11 assists during his time with the club.
The 25-year-old spent part of his youth career with Liverpool, after joining the Reds in controversial circumstances. He was snapped up from Barcelona in 2015 after the Catalans were found to have broken FIFA’s rules on signing underage players.
Signed from Ajax, he was subsequently loaned to PSV Eindhoven prior to his switch to Liverpool, as the forward was one of six youth players barred from playing again for Barcelona by FIFA. The La Liga giants were given a one-year transfer ban and fined £306,000 as further punishment.
Adekanye spent four years with Liverpool, progressing to their Under-23s side before leaving at the end of his contract to sign for Lazio in 2019. And while he never made a competitive appearance for the Reds, it is claimed that Alexander-Arnold was not a fan of his fellow youngster.
Liverpool academy director Alex Inglethorpe recalled how the Reds vice-captain ‘probably hated’ Adekanye, with the forward’s high level of self-belief said to have got under Alexander-Arnold’s skin during their time as team-mates.
"Trent had a really good sparring partner in a young lad called Bobby Adekanye, who's gone on to have a really good career in Holland," Inglethorpe said during an appearance on the High Performance podcast.
"But Bobby was really confident in his own ability... really super confident. Every day he would tell Trent what he was going to do, and you could see Trent hated it with a passion.
"He probably hated him [Adekanye] with a passion, at the time. It was competitive, it was real, and I think if you're sparring or rehearsing, you need that."
Adekanye made 15 appearances for Lazio after leaving Liverpool, recording one goal and one assist. He would spend time on loan at Cadiz, ADO Den Haag and Crotone before signing for Go Ahead Eagles in June 2022.
