Trent Alexander-Arnold, Zubimendi and the quadruple - 7 Liverpool questions need answers in 2025
The New Year is almost upon us, and 2025 looks as though it could be a monumental one for Liverpool.
As Arne Slot and his players celebrate Christmas, they can reflect on a job well done so far this season. The Dutchman has enjoyed a sensational introduction to life on Merseyside, having won 21 of his 25 games in charge, with just the one defeat to his name.
He looks set to guide his side into the New Year as not only the number one side in England, but in Europe. There’s still a long way to go though, and a lot that needs to be decided.

Liverpool.com has taken a look at the big questions that need to be answered by the Reds in 2025, including contract matters, transfers, and of course their hopes of silverware.
Will Van Dijk and Salah stay?
The most pressing matter for Liverpool fans right now, and it’s looking increasingly like the answer will arrive in the New Year.
Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah’s contracts are still set to expire at the end of the season as things stand. They have been offered new deals, but we’re still yet to hear whether any decision has been made for either.
Supporters will hope an update arrives before we arrive in 2025, although we’re quickly running out of time in that regard. In fact, this time next week, the pair will be able to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs if they so wish.
Hopefully it doesn’t come to that. Both Van Dijk and Salah have been in imperious form this season, and keeping them on board beyond the current campaign is vital for Liverpool.
Is Alexander-Arnold heading to Madrid?
While it has felt like Van Dijk and Salah are leaning toward extending their stays, the same can’t be said for Trent Alexander-Arnold. In fact, there will be plenty of fans fearing that his mind is already made up on a potential move to Real Madrid.
We might soon find out if that is the case. Like Van Dijk and Salah, the Liverpool vice-captain will be free to speak to foreign clubs next week, and we all know who will be at the front of the queue.
Alexander-Arnold has maintained his silence throughout the saga, insisting that his future will not be played out in public, which in of itself hasn’t filled fans with too much hope. He has indicated that trophies will be the deciding factor though, so Liverpool might have something to prove on that front this season.
Supporters will of course hope that one of their own stays put, but if Alexander-Arnold does depart, things could get messy, with questions for FSG as to how the situation was allowed to get to this point.
Will Zubimendi change his mind?
Martin Zubimendi broke Liverpool hearts during the summer when he turned down a move to Anfield. Less than six months later, has the midfielder had another change of heart?
The Reds certainly haven’t been left with any regrets yet, with Ryan Gravenberch excelling in the No.6 role and proving to be a huge factor in their success so far this season. Nevertheless, another quality option in the position wouldn’t go amiss.

And there are suggestions that Zubimendi might now be considering his future at Real Sociedad. His love for his hometown club won him over during the summer, but with Liverpool flying on all fronts, he might be looking on a little enviously.
No doubt more rumors will be swirling around in January, although it would be a surprise if Liverpool or anyone else makes a move for him then. We might find out whether Zubimendi has made another U-turn at some point in 2025 though, and the Reds should be in the running again if he has.
Does Robertson need replacing?
While Liverpool is flying at the moment, there are one or two questions over certain areas of the squad.
Andy Robertson has been a brilliant servant to the club, but it would be fair to say that it hasn’t been his best season so far. His performances haven’t met his usual high standards, and he has found himself under more pressure from Kostas Tsimikas since the start of the campaign.
Now the wrong side of 30, and with his contract expiring in 2026, the obvious question regarding the Scot will be whether Liverpool needs to find a new left-back. With a number of quality options catching the eye, including the likes of Antonee Robinson, Milos Kerkez and Rayan Ait-Nouri, the Reds won’t be short of options.
Robertson though shouldn’t be underestimated, and you certainly wouldn’t rule him out of answering his critics during the second half of the season.
Who will lead the line?
You’d have to say the jury is no longer out on Darwin Nunez. It seems most Liverpool fans have reached their verdict, and it’s not good news for the Uruguayan.
In his third season now at Anfield, you would hope to see some improvement on the raw talent that first arrived in 2022. Four goals in 22 appearances though is not a good return, and we’re still seeing those frustrating misses that have blighted his time on Merseyside.
It seems Slot favors Diogo Jota as his starting No.9, but while his finishing abilities cannot be doubted, his injury record doesn’t quite fill you with hope. Therefore, a decision will have to be made on who will be Liverpool’s man to lead the line next season, and what to do with the current options.
Nunez certainly looks the most at risk. Liverpool paid a lot of money to bring him over from Benfica, but with little sign of improvement since then, 2025 might be the time the club decides to cut its losses.
Who will be No.1?
Liverpool already knows there will be one new face arriving in 2025. Giorgi Mamardashvili is due to complete his move to Anfield next summer, but the arrival of the Georgia international does leave a big question mark over the Reds’ goalkeeping department.
You’d have to imagine that Mamardashvili’s presence would lead to Caoimhin Kelleher finally getting his wish and securing a move away in order to become a No.1 elsewhere. But what to do with Alisson?
Any Liverpool fan will tell you he is the best goalkeeper in the world. The problem though has been getting him out onto the pitch, with Alisson suffering more than his fair share of injuries over the last couple of years.
Mamardashvili is also surely too good to have sitting on the bench week in, week out, so how does Slot solve the problem? We’ll have to wait and see.
Is the quadruple possible?
It’s the big one. Liverpool is still in the hunt for four trophies this season, and they’re in a superb position in both the Premier League and Champions League.
A four-point lead in the former puts them in pole position as 2025 approaches, and there’s the added bonus that they probably don’t even have to worry about Manchester City, who have imploded over the last month or so. Chelsea and Arsenal will provide a stern challenge though, and there are plenty of games to go before anything is decided.
Meanwhile, a place in the last-16 in Europe is all but secure, and that will be a huge benefit as the Red will avoid playing two extra play-off games. The knockout stages will of course be even tougher though, especially with some big names potentially among the unseeded teams they could face.
There is also a two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final against Tottenham to contend with, as well as the FA Cup, which gets underway with the visit of Accrington Stanley next month. If Liverpool is to make history and win all four competitions, Slot will have to do some incredible juggling with his squad.
There is no doubt that the Premier League and Champions League will take precedence, and if a title win were to come at the expense of the two domestic cups, fans would no doubt forgive Slot. In any case, it makes for an exciting 2025.
