Jürgen Klopp has revealed Trent Alexander-Arnold’s mum was ‘worried’ when the German took over as Liverpool manager, fearing that her son might not get an opportunity under him.

Alexander-Arnold was yet to make his professional debut for Liverpool when Klopp took over from Brendan Rodgers back in 2015. Aged just 17 then, the full-back would have to wait another year to get his opportunity in the first-team.

There was a fear among the parents of the club’s academy players though that Rodgers’ departure, and Klopp’s arrival, would prevent their sons from breaking into the side. Alexander-Arnold’s emergence soon put that anxiety to rest.

Now 25, Alexander-Arnold has made 309 appearances in total for Liverpool, all under Klopp’s management. Not only that, but he was made vice-captain by the German last summer.

Ahead of his final game in charge against Wolves on Sunday, Klopp was paid a visit by Alexander-Arnold’s mum, who thanked him for his impact at Anfield. She also lifted the lid on the concerns the parents had when he first joined the club.

“This morning Trent's mum was here, she wanted to say thank you and goodbye,” Klopp explained. “She told me what she thought when Brendan left and I came in.

“They told her before [that] when your boy is that age you need an English manager because other managers don't look at the academy. She was really worried. How that all worked out was a beautiful story.”

Liverpool.com says: The parents needn’t have worried. Under Klopp’s guidance, there have been plenty of opportunities for Liverpool’s youngsters to break into the first-team.

The 56-year-old was praised after the club’s Carabao Cup triumph this year for showing faith in a number of the Reds’ academy stars at Wembley. The likes of Bobby Clark, James McConnell, Jayden Danns and Lewis Koumas have all been handed opportunities this season, while Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley have enjoyed breakthrough campaigns.

Hopefully, Arne Slot will be able to continue the good work, and some of those names mentioned will become stars of the future. Alexander-Arnold is the ultimate example of what can be achieved if faith is put in the club’s academy, and hopefully we’ll see even more promising youngsters break into the first-team under the Dutchman’s tutelage.
