Who is Trent Kone-Doherty? Liverpool teenager included on Arne Slot's bench vs PSV Eindhoven

Trent Kone-Doherty's rise to the Liverpool first-team is complete having been handed his first major opportunity by Arne Slot. The 18-year-old has been named on the bench for Wednesday's clash with PSV Eindhoven.

With Liverpool's place in the Champions League round of 16 booked ahead of time, Slot has opted to rest a number of his big stars ahead of the weekend game against Bournemouth. Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker, Ibrahima Konate, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz have all not travelled to the Netherlands.

And so, the door has been opened to a number of the Reds' talented starlets to be granted their opportunity on the main stage. Forward Kone-Doherty is amongst those, and here the ECHO provides the key information about the teenager.

Who is Trent Kone-Doherty?

The player was born on June 30, 2006, in Derry, Northern Ireland, but holds Republic of Ireland citizenship. He first joined local side Foyle Harps at the age of six before later progressing to League of Ireland Premier Division side Derry City. He quickly began playing above his age group, appearing on the bench for the first time as a 15-year-old against St. Patrick's Athletic.

When did Trent Kone-Doherty sign for Liverpool?

Kone-Doherty's talent at youth level was noticed by Liverpool so he came on trial in 2020 before officially signing for the club's Academy in July 2022 at the same time Ben Doak arrived from Celtic. Taking to Instagram, the then-16-year-old wrote: "Surreal to have signed with this great club @liverpoolfc. Excited for what the future holds!"

In his maiden campaign with the Under-18s he scored 11 goals and provided numerous assists, resulting in the awarding of a first professional contract in October 2023.

Has Trent Kone-Doherty played for Liverpool?

By the time he had signed his first professional contract, Kone-Doherty had been welcomed into training sessions with Jurgen Klopp's first team at the AXA Training Centre. Prior to kick-off in Eindhoven this is yet to have transpired into a full first-team debut.

The 18-year-old has remained under the watch of Slot and his coaching staff, continuing to be given opportunities given his record in the Academy.

For the Under-18s he now has 29 total appearances with 19 goals scored, for the Under-19s in UEFA Youth League competition he has five goals in 11 matches, and lastly with the Under-21s he has five goals in 24 outings.

His personal highlight was two goals in the 7-1 demolition of Arsenal in last season's FA Youth Cup.

What position does Trent Kone-Doherty play?

Kone-Doherty is a forward known for his sheer pace and trickery. Primarily he plays for the Liverpool Academy as a left-winger, but has also gained experience on the right flank and also as a centre forward.

Has Trent Kone-Doherty played for Republic of Ireland?

Kone-Doherty is yet to make a full senior debut for Republic of Ireland, though has made 22 appearances across the various youth levels. Seven of those were Under-16, six were Under-17 and most recently for the Under-19s he has played nine times.
