TRETHOMAS Bluebirds climbed back to the top of Cymru South when they completed a double over Newport City at Spytty Park.

The Bluebirds took the spoils in Ystrad Mynach 2-1 thanks to a pair of late free-kicks and repeated the scoreline on a freezing night in Newport.

Kallum Thomas’ corner scrappily went in after some iffy defending for the opener after 10 minutes – it has been credited by some as an Owen Cuddihy own goal and listed on the official FAW app as a Gareth Tedstone strike – and the visitors doubled their lead after another error.

Goalkeeper Cohen Riella mirrored the mistake made by Bradford’s Harry Lewis at Rodney Parade in 2023 by mistaking the rugby markings for his penalty area.

That conceded a free-kick that was quickly taken and slotted by Tedstone approaching half-time.

Josh Graham struck for the Steelmen approaching the hour but they failed to take their chances to grab a point.

While the Bluebirds were going back above Llanelli Town, Cwmbran Celtic were climbing off the bottom of the table.

Celtic remain in the relegation zone but boosted their survival hopes with a fine 2-1 win at Caerau Ely thanks to an early Alex McDowell strike and a Cole Doolan effort soon after the restart.

Celtic are now above Taffs Well and are level on points with Goytre United and two back on Penrhiwceiber Rangers.

They will climb out of the drop zone if they can stun sixth-placed Carmarthen Town out west on Tuesday night.
