Trevoh Chalobah's return to Chelsea is the final nail in the coffin for Axel Disasi. Football.london understands that the French centre-back is wanted by several foreign clubs and is very much up for sale.

A deal can finally be completed now that cover at the back has been found. Chelsea confirmed the recall of Chalobah from his loan at Crystal Palace just six months after sending him out.

Chalobah had been exiled from the senior squad over the summer and was not included on the pre-season tour of America. Despite returning from injury to play a key role under Mauricio Pochettino at the end of last season, Chalobah was told he was not part of the plans under Enzo Maresca.

The decision to move him on was made by Chelsea's new head coach arrived, driven by sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart. Winstanley, specifically, spoke to Chalobah before his return and he went into the changing room to see his old teammates after the 1-1 against Palace 10 days ago.

Disasi was left on the bench at Selhurst Park, meanwhile, with Josh Acheampong preferred. Maresca then signalled his intentions ahead of Tuesday's Premier League meeting with Bournemouth by starting Disasi in a heavily rotated XI for the FA Cup win over Morecambe.

Acheampong was rested for that game and then returned to the team ahead of Disasi and Tosin Adarabioyo against Bournemouth. Disasi was left out of the matchday squad along with Ben Chilwell, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Cesare Casadei and Carney Chukwuemeka.

All five of them are free to find new clubs this window. Disasi is the closest to first-team action, though, and has been used as auxiliary right-back in recent weeks.

With Reece James once again hit by injury problems - although he played 45 minutes at the weekend and came from the bench to score a late equaliser in the 2-2 draw to Bournemouth - and Wesley Fofana facing another lengthy period out, Chelsea have been pushed to find new solutions. Renato Veiga, signed in the summer for £12million, is expected to leave this month at least until the end of the season.

Benoit Badiashile has also been left sidelined with fitness issues and will be out for another month at least. This has left a pathway for Acheampong into the setup and prompted a look into the defence earlier than anticipated.

Chalobah, who is able to play both right-back and centre-back, was deemed the right fit for this window. His return will not stop the push for a permanent signing later this year.

Maresca's stocks with Chalobah added therefore leaves Disasi as surplus to requirements. He has struggled to adapt to Maresca's more progressive style of play and, just 18 months after arriving for £39million to replace Chalobah following an injury of his own, is set to exit.
