Trevor Lawrence injury update: Jaguars QB weighing options, Mac Jones likely to start
The Jaguars have been stacking losses throughout the 2024 season and added another one before even taking the field in Week 10.
Thanks to an injury to his non-throwing shoulder, Jacksonville's latest loss comes in the form of a Trevor Lawrence absence. The quarterback is likely to miss the team's Week 10 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Now the 2-7 Jaguars, who can essentially call it quits on this season, will turn to former Patriots' quarterback Mac Jones to try and right the ship. Here is the latest on Lawrence and how the Jaguars will attempt to replace him.
When was Trevor Lawrence's injury?
Lawrence took a big hit from Eagles' linebacker Zack Baun at the end of a scramble in the second quarter in Week 9. It's believed the injury for the Jacksonville signal caller stems from that play.
The alarms began to sound when Lawrence was limited in practice on Wednesday, and head coach Doug Pederson wouldn't commit to the fourth-year quarterback playing this week. The team opted to add depth to their quarterback room, C.J. Beathard off the Dolphins practice squad.
Now, the primary concern is whether Lawrence will return at all. The Jaguars are firmly out of a playoff spot and are moving on to 2025. Aside from that reality, Rapoport said that Lawrence is weighing all his options for the future and added that surgery is not scheduled right now.
Lawrence is listed as day-to-day, but it's hard to see the team putting their injured franchise quarterback under center again in a lost season.
Jaguars QB depth chart
After Lawrence's injury, Jacksonville has two remaining quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. The backup, Jones, will slide into the starting role, with Beathard assuming the QB2 role. Here's how the depth chart shakes out:
Both quarterbacks bring starting experience to the lineup. Jones was acquired from the Patriots by the Jaguars for a 2024 fifth-round pick in the draft. He was taken by New England with the No. 15 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and started each of the last three seasons. The Patriots opted to move on when they were in a position to select a top quarterback in the 2024 draft. Jones was put in the tough position of trying to help the franchise fill a void left by Tom Brady, but ultimately couldn't live up to those great expectations. After a promising rookie year, Jones took a step back in each of the next two seasons but has shown to be a serviceable option in the pros.
Beathard doesn't bring as much starting experience, but he brings plenty of longevity. He's been in and around the NFL since 2017 after the 49ers selected him in the third round. He is probably best known for being one of the options behind then-49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. In what was an often-injured San Francisco quarterback room, Beathard and Nick Mullens often held down the fort in spots to get the team through those seasons.
It's unclear whether the Jaguars will elevate practice squad quarterback John Rhys Plumlee to the active roster as an emergency option on Sunday. Still, he seems to be the likeliest candidate to join the depth chart.
