Who is Trey Nyoni? Liverpool teenager could finally make full debut vs Southampton
With Liverpool's academy continuing to thrive, there a couple of names that Liverpool fans will be aware of. Rio Ngumoha is making waves after his summer move from Chelsea but 17-year-old Trey Nyoni has caught plenty of attention in the last year.
After he impressed during pre-season, the former Leicester City youth product, signed by the Reds in 2023, has been training with the first team and he could be set for some Carabao Cup action on Wednesday night.
Nyoni has been named in Liverpool squads before. He, alongside the likes of Jayden Danns, was involved in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley last year. Bobby Clark starred off the bench and while then-16-year-old Nyoni didn't emerge from the sidelines, it was a big statement for him even to be there.

Nyoni is an England U17 international who has started life as a Reds player brilliantly. He scored in three of his first four Liverpool U18 Premier League games while assisting in the other, catching the eye with his dazzling runs from midfield. That was enough to earn a step up to Premier League 2 level, and he has not looked back. Earlier this season he captained Liverpool U19s at the age of 17 in the UEFA Youth League, appearing in a European competition for the first time.
After U21 recognition, the first team is the next step. He made his senior bow in the FA Cup against Southampton last season and then got a run out in the previous round at Brighton. The Times reports that his full debut could come against the Saints on Wednesday night.
Obviously, it's still very early days for Nyoni and anything can happen. But if he manages to avoid injury and continues his progress, the pathway for him at Liverpool is clear. The likes of Ben Doak, Kaide Gordon, Bobby Clark and Harvey Elliott have all set a precedent.
Like Nyoni, they arrived at a similar age at Liverpool, impressed in the academy and eventually got their opportunity in the first team. Nyoni very much has the potential to be the next name on that list. He is definitely someone to keep an eye on in the academy and it's almost inevitable that there will be more training sessions with the first team for him in the future.
Should he continue to develop and progress on the same trajectory, in years to come, the summer of 2023 may not only be remembered as the window that brought the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister to the club, but also Nyoni. For now, remember the name.
