Trey Ogunsuyi believes there is 'a path' for him to progress at Sunderland amid transfer links to Liverpool. The teenage talent has been speaking about how he hopes to get more chances in the future after making his first-team debut at the weekend.

Ogunsuyi described making his Sunderland bow as a “dream come true” after featuring in the Black Cats’ narrow FA Cup third-round exit to Stoke City. The 18-year-old, who has been with the club since the age of 10, was one of five Academy graduates to feature at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

A Belgium youth international, Ogunsuyi signed his first professional contract last January and made his U21s debut at just 17. This season he has delivered 10 goal involvements across eight U21 and U18 matches and is believed to have caught the eye of Premier League giants Liverpool.

The forward has often been included in Regis Le Bris’ matchday squads, being named on the bench six times before replacing Eliezer Mayenda for his senior debut in extra time. And he believes there is more to come from him at the club if he keeps working hard.

Speaking to safc.com, Ogunsuyi said: “It’s hard to put into words because I feel a lot of emotions right now. I’ve been at this club for so long, since I was little, and it has always been my goal to make my debut for the senior team. I want to thank all the staff, the team, and everyone who has helped me get to this point. I’m going to keep pushing myself for more chances.

“I found out I was coming on very late in the game. I just got told, ‘get ready, you’re coming on.’ I don’t think I’ll ever forget hearing those words – it was my moment. I even had a chance with a header. That would’ve been special if it went in – on another day it does – but just to have that opportunity was unbelievable.

He continued: “The team is packed with Academy players. It gives you that motivation and encouragement that I can achieve what they have too. There’s a path here if you work hard. I’ve seen it, and I was lucky enough to get a chance today. But now, I need to keep going.

“Every time I get involved, I feel more comfortable. The lads have all played their part, welcoming me and helping me settle in. But I know I need to keep working, and hopefully, I’ll get another chance soon.”

Ogunsuyi's fellow Academy of Light team-mate Harrison Jones has also admitted his first start for Sunderland was “a dream come true” and “surreal.” The 20-year-old was named in the starting XI against Stoke City after a run of fixtures in the matchday squad.

After making his Sunderland debut as a late substitute against Preston North End earlier in the season, Jones told safc.com that his hard work is now coming to fruition.

“I am delighted to get the opportunity, it’s surreal,” he commented. “Any Sunderland supporter growing up wants to play at the Stadium of Light, it’s a dream come true.

“I felt I did okay, I still have plenty to learn. The messages before the game were to win the second balls, keep calm in possession and enjoy the moment.”
