Triathlon returning to city after years of logistical challenges
A local triathlon club has announced its first triathlon since 2021, marking a long-awaited return to the city's sporting calendar.
Carlisle Tri Club has announced a series of events for 2025, including a duathlon at Carlisle Airport on March 16, a 10K run at the racecourse on June 8, and a triathlon at The Sands Centre on July 20, in partnership with GLL.
Club secretary Lucy Taylor said the return of the triathlon is particularly exciting after years of logistical challenges: “We just haven’t been able to have one.
“We used to host it at Morton Pools, but after they closed, we moved to Wigton Baths.
"That didn’t really work – it wasn’t in Carlisle for starters."
She explained that other issues included limited parking at the venue.
After a break of several years, the club has now secured a venue and route that works.
“We’ve had several events committee meetings and finally found a solution,” Ms Taylor said.
The triathlon will be held in partnership with The Sands Centre and GLL, with the swimming portion taking place in the centre’s pool.
Ms Taylor said it will be the only pool-based triathlon in the area: “The next nearest might be Ulverston or Ponteland.
“It’s great for people wanting to start out in triathlon.
"The thought of open water swimming scares a few people, and you don’t have to invest in a wetsuit for this one.”
The club is also introducing a new venue for its duathlon, which involves running and cycling.

Previously held at Kirkbampton Village Hall, this year’s event will take place at Carlisle Airport.
The new course at the airport will allow competitors to run on a closed runway, a rare feature for a duathlon.
