Troy Deeney hasn't always got it right about Liverpool. But he's just written something that many Reds may well agree with.

The former Watford captain raised eyebrows earlier this season when he suggested that Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah, who is now into the final six months of his contract, was not world class.

Deeney said: “I think Mohamed Salah is excellent, he’s a pivotal part for Liverpool and they should never have let it (his contract) get to this situation. But I understand that there’s a financial structure around what they want to try and keep to.

"My argument has always been that I just don’t think he’s world class. But world class is just a different opinion, what I think of world class is would I want my kids to play like that player? That's what I think is world class.

“If I was asking my kids who want to be forwards, I would be saying I would like them to look at what Vinicius Jr does as opposed to Mohamed Salah.

"But his goals that he (Salah) scores, he scores an unbelievable amount of goals, he's highly effective, but that’s just my opinion. He's probably going to turn around and say, 'Who the f*** is Troy?', and fair play to him, but that's my opinion."

It was an opinion that was widely derided and since Deeney aired it, Salah has continued to go from strength to strength and he currently leads both the Premier League goalscoring and assists charts.

The Egyptian netted his 18th league goal of the season in Sunday's 2-2 draw at home to Manchester United. But it was another Reds player who caught Deeney's eye.

And that player is midfield metronome Alexis Mac Allister.

Naming the Argentina World Cup winner in his Team of the Week for BBC Sport, Deeney said: “Every time I watch him he always gets an assist and he always looks like the best player on the pitch.

“I know that’s a bold statement to make when you’ve got people like Mohamed Salah, but every time I watch him he jumps off the screen to me.

“Excellent performance against Manchester United, really combative, silky touches and he may go down as a Liverpool legend if he stays there long enough.”

Reds boss Arne Slot also purred about Mac Allister, saying his press conference ahead of tonight's Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg tie at Tottenham Hotspur: "When I think about Macca, I cannot come up with a poor performance from him - he is so consistent in his performances.

"Of course, he is not like Mo (Salah), Cody (Gakpo) or Lucho (Luis Diaz) scoring 15 goals and 12 assists, but he is so involved in every game we play. He is so important for us defensively as well, bringing the ball towards these players."
