Celtic’s American Bhoys already have a song dedicated to them, and Auston Trusty is hoping that his partnership with Cameron Carter-Vickers will propel both of them to fulfil their American dream by starring together for their country at next year’s World Cup.

Trusty was blown away to hear the Celtic fans sing their new ditty – a tribute to the club’s all-American central defensive partnership to the tune of Estelle hit ‘American Boy’ - saying that the warm welcome from the supporters has helped him to settle into life in Scotland.

With the biggest tournament in international football being jointly hosted by the USA next year, Trusty is desperate to be at the party, and he says that the environment at Celtic is bringing the best out of him - and giving him the best chance of fulfilling that ambition.

When asked if he was aware of the song the Celtic fans had been singing about him and Carter-Vickers, he said: “Yeah, I heard that. It's amazing.

“To be far from home and not have family around…I remember I went to my first stop here in the UK at Birmingham City.

“In my first game, I made a slide tackle play and the fans started cheering, ‘USA, USA!’. It just made me feel at home right from the start and it just went from there for me.

“So, to be here for a short while and already have a song with myself and Cameron, it just means the world to me and it just makes you really feel at home.

“I've had some messages [about the song from back home]. They're just loving it.

“It's a little bit different being in the States and you're not here so you don't really feel the atmosphere. You can't really...if you don't see Celtic Park, you're not at Celtic Park, you just have to use your imagination.

“But for the ones that have been here, they know what it's like to hear fans singing. They can already tell it's amazing.”

Trusty knows that if he is to star for the USMNT, the first thing he has to do is cement his place beside Carter-Vickers in the Celtic defence, with Liam Scales breathing down his neck to get into the side.

He says though that the thought of partnering his Celtic teammate on such a stage is helping to drive him to give his best to his club every day.

“That'd be amazing [to play with Cameron at the World Cup],” he said.

“I think that's absolutely on my mind and I'm sure for Cameron too, it's on his mind as well.

“We have to do our job here and doing our job here allows us to propel ourselves into consideration for that team, and get the opportunities that we need.

“Take care of business here, then that'd be amazing.”

If he can do that, then he thinks the familiarity and understanding they will both have from playing together week-in, week-out can only be a plus-point for international manager Mauricio Pochettino.

“Yeah, absolutely,” he said.

“I think you want chemistry, especially in the back line. You want chemistry, guys who actually know what they're doing and playing at a high level. It doesn't hurt us whatsoever.

“Nothing's impossible. Everything's realistic. It's important you have those targets to try and strive for. Even before I came here, that's the goal.

“I've played with a lot of good defenders throughout my career, but Cameron's really good and we have good chemistry.

“I think every single game we get to play together and the more time we have together, the centre-backs and all the defenders and the whole entire team, the more you play, the more chemistry you get.

“I can see it growing and growing every single game and knowing what he's going to do and what I'm going to do and how we're both going to react and help each other out.

“Game by game, it's getting better and better.”

In the here and now, Trusty is delighted with the reaction of his side to the disappointment of the Old Firm derby defeat, with the win over Dundee United on Wednesday night stretching their lead at the top of the Premiership table – temporarily at least – to 16 points.

“There's lows and highs to football, and that was a low for us,” he said.

“You have good games and you have bad games, we just didn't show up for that game. It's a testament to the team and how we react to things.

“We've had lows before already this season, and it shows the true character of a team to bounce back from losses.

“Hopefully it showed you guys and showed everyone else that we're a good team.

“It's game by game. I don't think any of us are counting the points, we're just focusing on game by game and doing our job.”
