Darwin Nunez has admitted to finding his form at Liverpool “difficult” after he proved to be the Reds’ hero against Brentford.

The Uruguayan struck twice in stoppage time to earn Liverpool a 2-0 win in London after Arne Slot’s side had looked destined to drop more points in the Premier League title race. Thanks to Nunez though, the Reds now hold a six-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the table after the Gunners drew 2-2 with Aston Villa.

It has been a frustrating season so far for Nunez. Before Saturday, he had only struck twice in 15 league appearances, and just four times in all competitions.

His form has seen him drop further down the pecking order at Anfield, with Diogo Jota being favored as the No.9 by Slot, while Luis Diaz has even emerged as an option for the role ahead of him recently. What’s more, speculation has been growing over his future, with recent reports claiming there is interest from Saudi Arabia.

Crucially though, Nunez delivered when it mattered most, with his goals guiding Liverpool to a first league win of 2025, and ensuring they still hold a healthy lead in the title race. Speaking after the game to Sky Sports, the striker admitted to finding his recent struggles tough.

"I think you have to stay mentally strong, never give up,” Nunez said. “Yes, there are moments that are very difficult for us players, for me, it's right now.

“But I never throw the towel in. I always carry on working. In training, if I need to stay and practice more, I stay to improve.

“I think the work that I do on the pitch to help the team to defend as well. I think I’ve always done it well but I haven't scored goals and I know people look at that. The striker has to score goals.

"The truth is that I’m going through a rough patch and, like I said before, I stay focused on my job and giving everything for Liverpool. I think it's important to keep my head up and I always say I've got to work because I need to improve. I stay strong with this mentality and with the support of my family and the fans that are incredible."

Liverpool.com says: Fair play to Nunez. We do need to see more from him in order to suggest he may have turned a corner, but he deserves to enjoy this moment. It could be crucial to Liverpool’s title hopes this season.
