Twelve days into the transfer window and Sheffield Wednesday have yet to make a new signing.

There is undeniable potential in Danny Röhl's squad. With 20 matches remaining, the Owls currently occupy 10th position in the Championship, three points outside of the play-off positions. Can they keep pace with the top six? Or are they destined for mid-table mediocrity? Their season sits on a knife-edge.

Röhl has repeatedly spoken of his desire to bring in reinforcements to boost their promotion aspirations. He said: "You see there is really a challenge to get some players, and you have to go all-in. Let’s see what we can do, we will try and hopefully we can get some good players for our squad.”

Yorkshire Live has taken a look at two positions Wednesday must strengthen before the market shuts on February 3:

Centre-back

Röhl chopped and changed his defence in the early weeks of the season. A serious injury to Akin Famewo forced Röhl to switch Max Lowe, primarily a full-back, to the left centre-back role. Lowe has acquitted himself well in a makeshift backline. Yan Valery has also played out of position and done a steady job on the opposite flank.

However, with Dominic Iorfa out of action for up to two months because of a muscular problem, Wednesday's defence is in serious need of strengthening. With a lack of experience and strength in depth at the back, it is crucial a new face comes in as Röhl looks to tighten up one of the leakiest defences in the division.

A report in The Star says Wednesday are interested in signing Ipswich Town defender Harry Clarke on loan for the rest of the season. The double promotion winner has made just seven appearances for the Town so far this season in the Premier League, having played 35 times last term. It is believed that Ipswich may allow Clarke to leave on loan in search of regular game time. Securing his signature could be a huge boost for the Owls' play-off dreams.

Left wing back

Röhls formations and tactics can often be a headache to interpret as they change and alternate regularly during a match. However, it is clear he likes to get his wide players high up the pitch, often using a wing back system to make it happen. There are a variety of options on the right side, with Valery, Pol Valentin, Liam Palmer and even Djeidi Gassama all capable of playing there.

But the left flank lacks depth, energy and defensive stability. Marvin Johnson has gone off the boil of late, producing a number of below-par performances. Extra competition in this department would keep Johnson on his toes. Röhl insists he's not looking for replacements, merely upgrades. He said: “This is the job at the minute, we will look to some players, and it is important to understand it is not just about replacing a player, it is about increasing our quality.”

Röhl has given little away over potential transfer targets. He said: “There are a lot of rumours and names at the moment! I will not make statements on individual players now. You see it in the whole market, there is a lot of activation in the market now, a lot of rumours, every club is linked with some players.”
