What Tyson Fury's wife Paris has said about husband's future as retirement confirmed
Tyson Fury’s wife Paris has consistently called for the former heavyweight champion to retire from boxing.
On Monday, ‘The Gypsy King’ posted a video on his social media to announce he was hanging up his gloves. "Hi everybody, I'm going to make this short and sweet," Fury said. "I'd like to announce my retirement from boxing. It's been a blast, I've loved every single minute of it. I'm going to end with this. Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side. Get up!"
It was a shock revelation from Fury, who had been widely anticipated to finally face Anthony Joshua at some point this year. However, the 36-year-old has decided to call time on his career after losing to Oleksandr Usyk for a second time in December. It is not the first time that Fury has stated he is done with boxing - but his wife Paris has often spoken about the prospect of her husband retiring.

In the build-up to his rematch with Usyk, Paris confirmed that she had not spoken to her husband during his training camp. "Yeah, it is true. I think after the last fight, everything that went on previously personally in our lives and then Tyson obviously had the outcome last time, I just think he decided this on his own and I had to support him in it,” Paris explained to iFL TV.
"He didn't want to be involved in family life so he's cut himself off from us for the last few months and he has put himself in a serious, serious condition and he looks very, very determined. So if it's what needed to be, then God willing tomorrow night it will all come out and it will all be good and all worthwhile."
Tyson's absence from her and their seven children was difficult for the family. However, Paris previously admitted that Tyson’s retirement in 2016, in the wake of his famous victory over Wladimir Klitschko, hit the couple hardest as he struggled with his mental health.
“It was the worst few years of our lives,” Paris told i in October 2023. “[Tyson’s mental health problems are] not something he’s conquered, but we’ve learned to deal with it. Getting a diagnosis was very helpful for me; it made me realise he’s not just being grumpy and negative towards me and the children. But it does get to you.”
Their family life was shown on Netflix as part of the At Home with the Furys documentary, released in August 2023. Fury had once again retired from the sport during filming, following his win over Dillian Whyte in April 2022, and Paris spoke about how she wished her husband would soon leave boxing behind.
“I wanted him to retire a few years ago. He isn’t doing it,” she said to talkSPORT in October 2023. “You saw it well documented on the [Netflix] documentary that he didn’t enjoy it. He doesn’t like being retired. But I’m hoping after Usyk that’s the end of the fight. I’m hoping that’s the end of it. What more could he prove? What more can he do?”
A month later, Heat claimed that Fury’s wife was close to giving him an ultimatum regarding his future in the sport. It may have taken back-to-back losses for Fury to consider leaving the ring for good, but it is not a new feeling for Paris, who had hoped for her husband to bow out of the sport by 2023.
"I think about his health, I think he'll probably do it for a few more years. He is 33 years old now - I think maybe until he is 35,” she told talkSPORT.
"I know Wladimir [Klitschko] and other boxers have gone into their 40s, but are you going to keep going until you lose? I don't know, I wouldn't want to see that for Tyson.
“I wouldn't want him to continue and there will always be someone who is younger and fresher if you are high, very high. I think maybe two or three more years and then Tyson should retire.”
