Rangers Fan View: An ugly week but the ugly win over Ross County will do nicely

This week has been ugly. The Rangers board dropped the ball with the Derek McInnes statement. Honestly, it worries me slightly that they have no plan for where they will go next in the manager hunt. They have to really get their finger out. Frankly, it’s an outrage that we are now in the most important month of the season with the under-20 coach in charge.

Furthermore, the whole managerial episode has been farcical. Unfortunately, for us fans, it will rumble on to the end of the year. We can only hope that we can pick up enough points to keep us up there for the next six week and hopefully the new manager can come in and kick on.

Following on with the ugly theme, that’s exactly how I would describe the win over Ross County. However, the Christmas miracle came early as we now have won three games in a row for the first time this season. That in itself was the biggest positive and relief of the afternoon.

Murty went with the diamond in midfield with Daniel Candeias replacing Ryan Jack on the right-hand side. It didn’t work at all. The first half was flat and the players have to take 100% responsibility for that. Sadly, the energy, commitment and work rate from many of them was about four levels below the last two games. It’s no surprise that the fans get frustrated at this group players; it’s as if the team has split personality.

However, going back to the diamond, Daniel Candeias played as a winger rather than being tucked in on the right side, which meant he was leaving the rest of midfield exposed on too many occasions. Only Ross McCrorie could merit pass marks from the first half display. It was terrible and it was summed up by the nonsensical goal we conceded. Unfortunately, it was all far too easy. Danny Wilson sold himself, and we were all over the place.

Incidentally, all credit to Graeme Murty for changing it at half-time. He went with a 4-2-3-1, with Alfredo Morelos up front. It worked. We got a better grip of the middle of the park and Candeias came on to a game. He was the one who got the assist for Morelos to equalise and I thought he was key to the win in the second period.

I was delighted for Morelos. He missed a sitter minutes before his goal but he took his goal with the confidence of a striker who is on a scoring run rather than one who hadn’t scored in a while.

Overall, I felt it was a massive positive for us to get the victory. Additionally, from a mentally standpoint it was nice to see us come back from the early setback and not crumble like we did against Hamilton and Dundee. It’s been long overdue, especially at Ibrox. We need to maintain that kind of sport moving forward.

Having said that, the performance was absolutely not good enough. However, if we play like that until the winter break and win every game, I will take that. It’s been a tough week for the club. But it’s nice to see the players end it by grinding out a very important victory. Let’s hope they carry on and get three points on Wednesday at Easter Road.
