Michael van Gerwen says he’s short-changed himself and slammed his own unacceptable collapse at the World Masters.

The Dutch star crashed out of the tournament when defeated by Dimitri Van den Bergh. Van Gerwen was hit by a nine-darter from his rival, but still had a strong grip of the darts contest before making major errors in the closing set.

The three-times World champ was devastated with his setback as he desperately wanted to win the newly-rebranded tournament which is backed by his sponsors Winmau. But it all went wrong and Van Gerwen pointed the finger of blame squarely at himself as he told Viaplay: “This is just unacceptable. Normally I am someone who makes few mistakes when you can finish it, but I shortchanged myself so incredibly hard. During the first six sets, I hardly made any mistakes. I can only blame myself for this. I made way too many mistakes in that last set.

“I gave it away completely in that last one, that just shouldn’t happen to me and I bitterly regret that. I felt I was the better player, but then you get it over the line and I didn’t do that.”
