Unai Emery has suggested Aston Villa are well equipped to get the better of Club Brugge in the Champions League round of 16 after taking information from the league phase defeat.

Villa lost 1-0 at the Jan Breydel Stadium back in November after Tyrone Mings picked the ball up inside his own box, unaware Emi Martinez had taken a goal kick, before Hans Vanaken converted the spot-kick.

That win helped Brugge secure 24th place in the league phase table, scraping their way into the knockout play-offs.

Beating Atalanta 5-2 on aggregate, Brugge will now take on Villa after Emery's side were drawn out instead of Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16.

"Happy we are in the last 16 and happy with the draw," Emery said. "Every team in the last 16 deserves to be there. We played against Brugge and we knew their capacity to compete like they usually do.

"They beat Atalanta as well. We lost 1-0 there which is good information for us about how we have to compete, respect and prepare. Also avoid the mistakes we made.

"Really happy because we are going to enjoy this moment with our supporters. Now we have to focus on Chelsea."

If Villa progress to the quarter-finals, they will play either Liverpool or Paris Saint-Germain and will play the second leg at home.
