Nearly 10 days into the January transfer window and Leicester City are yet to make a single signing despite the issues within Ruud van Nistelrooy's squad.

The Foxes currently sit 19th in the Premier League at the halfway stage and face an immediate return to the Championship should their fortunes not turn around. A number of positions need strengthening before the window closes due to out-of-form players and injuries to key players.

Concerns over the Premier League profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) means City may be limited in the business they can complete. However, despite having two current loan signings, there is scope to loan two players outside of the Premier League.

But which position requires the most attention from Jon Rudkin, Martyn Glover and van Nistelrooy? LeicestershireLive reporters provide their verdict on the priority January transfer...

On the back of last weekend's defeat to Aston Villa, there's a feeling that Leicester need to bring in another right-back to come in for James Justin and give him a break from the action. I can see that, but hear me out.

The defensive structure under Van Nistelrooy is much firmer than it was at the start of the season. I do believe a new right-back has to come in, even if it's a loan, but the club have to look at the options in attack.

Everyone loves Jamie Vardy and his goals this season have provided fans with more memories to remember him for when he does retire. But too many times this season have Leicester failed to progress up the pitch when the ball comes to him.

It isn't his fault, he isn't the sort of striker who holds the ball up and waits for the attacking players to support him. Patson Daka also doesn't offer that power in the final third. A player like Middlesbrough's Emmanuel Latte Lath or Villarreal's Thierno Barry would be my priority for the second half of the season.

There’s a few areas that I think will be important to add to in January if possible, one of those is on the right wing. The injury to Abdul Fatawu has hit the squad hard, and there is no real like-for-like replacement in the squad who can offer what the Ghanaian does. Kasey McAteer and Jordan Ayew have been used in the position so far, but are different types of players.

I think Fatawu will thrive under Ruud van Nistelrooy’s system, but while he’s recovering from injury, a similar player who can offer more pace and directness in wide areas could make a big difference in terms of attacking.

A loan deal may be the most sensible to do - it would provide that cover while Fatawu is out, but then allow the winger to take over once he’s recovered from injury, hopefully as soon as possible.

For me, Leicester need to sign a couple of players in January to give them the best chance of staying in the Premier League. A new striker, centre-back and right-winger look like areas the Foxes should target, but the most important position they HAVE to strengthen is at right-back.

I like James Justin and think he is still a capable operator, but his confidence is shot and he is costing City every single week at the moment. He was at fault - although Jordan Ayew didn't help him - for Aston Villa's second goal on Saturday and I think the Foxes get something if he doesn't give the ball away there.

With Ricardo Pereira still out and not looking like returning anytime soon, City need to add a right-back sooner rather than later. If they can sign one who is ready-made for the Premier League, then the team would no doubt get a huge boost ahead of the remainder of the season.

With City possessing the joint-worst defensive record in the division, strengthening the back-line feels like the obvious route this month. But the improvements under van Nistelrooy have lessened the need for a centre-back.

It’s been shown over the past couple of matches that with a decent defensive structure and better ball retention, City can limit the number of chances they give up to the opposition. Although the goals are still going in, that elusive clean sheet feels closer.

So, a right-sided winger should be the priority. City have flair and silky footwork in abundance in Bilal El Khannouss, Facundo Buonanotte and Stephy Mavididi. What they need is somebody who gets on the ball and tears past his marker. They need speed and directness.

Essentially, they need what they’re missing in Abdul Fatawu’s absence. A six-month loan would be ideal in that regard.

Beyond that, a right-back would be very handy. James Justin has not managed to play through his poor form. City simply need somebody who can lift the burden from him.
