'Versatile' Renato Veiga and Cole Palmer warning as Chelsea chase January reinforcements
Chelsea have enjoyed a fine start to life under new boss Enzo Maresca, but recent performances have put pressure on the team to not let their Champions League berth fall to Newcastle United or Manchester City - and football.london readers in our comments section think that there are some affordable options open to the club to help them do so.
Outgoings are also a major factor, with the future of some players both at the club and on loan elsewhere being up in the air. Squad members who have found playing time difficult to come by have had their eye on moves elsewhere, which could open up opportunities to raise some cash to help Chelsea cement a spot in the table.
'Versatile' Veiga
Renato Veiga has been linked with a permanent move away from Stamford Bridge, less than a year after his £11.8m signing. The 21-year-old has been solid enough when called upon, but has started just one Premier League game and has struggled to make a case over Marc Cucurella in Enzo Maresca's eyes.

Chelsea are willing to let him leave for offers over £20 million, it has been reported, and Borussia Dortmund are interested in the left back.
Football.london commenter Peterlwise thinks that the situation smacks of poor planning by Chelsea: "I just don't get Chelsea's transfer dealings/policies at all. Why did we get Veiga in the first place, give him a seven year contract, if we're now happy to sell him. If Maresca is not going to play Chilwell at all, who is there to cover for Cucurella? And don't think it's Gusto. He is NOT a left back.
"We've got rid of about 15 left-backs in the last couple of years. We need to cover all positions as has been required in the last few weeks. So, if Cucurella gets injured/suspended, who is there? And, don't play Colwill there, please. What did Veiga expect? He knew there would be, for most of the games, Cucurella in front of him.
We seem quite happy to bring back all the centre backs we've sold unnecessarily when, really, we are covered... particularly if we keep Veiga. Good player. Good purchase. Versatile. Keep him."
Trevoh Chalobah recall chances
Currently on loan at Crystal Palace, Chalobah was left out of their FA Cup game against Stockport County, with rumours that the Blues want to bring him back to Stamford Bridge to shore up a defence troubled by injury.
18-year-old Josh Acheampong made his Premier League debut on Saturday, covering for injury to Welsey Fofana and Benoit Badiashile. Recalling Chalobah could be one option to help Chelsea weather the storm and maintain a strong position in the table.
Reader GettingReal says: “I'd bring Chalobah back and sell Disasi. Trev is more reliable as a RCB and more versatile as a stand in RB or even DM.”
Bill Robertson doesn't think it's the best long-term choice: “Leave Chalobah where he is. Maresca doesn't want him, and we need to give Acheampong the game time.” Mojek agrees: “Acheampong is more promising than Chalobah.”
Santos option in Cole Palmer warning
Chelsea have been warned by an ex-player that relying too much on Cole Palmer for attacking output could hurt them in the long run, and offered up a solution - recalling Andrey Santos from Strasbourg. Former midfielder Emmanuel Petit has said that Santos is "shining in France", and could have a place in the current Chelsea squad.
Chelsea are looking to send Carney Chukwuemeka on loan, with Strasbourg being an option. They would have to recall one player already on loan with the club under FIFA rules to allow this, with Djordje Petrovic and Caleb Wiley already at the French club.
Commenter Kwalby says: “There's a huge difference between playing in French Ligue 1 and the EPL. Still, if the kid's got the technical side sorted, give him a runout and see if he can deal with the physical demands of the EPL.”
Bill Robertson writes: “Andrey Santos must come back at the end of the season, in place of Lavia who is always injured. We cannot build a team around Fofana, James and Lavia who are injury prone. Acheampong must play many games now and get plenty of experience before the end of the season.”
