Ruben Amorim is said to have made a gentleman’s agreement with Sporting CP not to approach any of their players in January as Manchester United head coach, thereby ruling out a move for Viktor Gyokeres.

The 39-year-old has already outlined that he would not raid his former club for players in the winter and cooled speculation on a move for Gyokeres. "Gyokeres costs €100million [£83m] and it's a lot," he said prior to his exit from Lisbon.

However, he did leave the door open for possible reunions in the summer. "What happens in the summer I don't know. Sporting players are good players. We will see what happens,“ Amorim mused.

Gyokeres has been the subject of intense speculation linking him to United due to his connection with Amorim and hot scoring streak. After netting 43 goals in 50 matches last season, he has fired home 23 strikes in 18 outings this term.

He hit the headlines earlier this month when he bagged a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League, having scored a quadruple against Portuguese league outfit Estrela Amadora four days earlier.

However, the chances of him securing a switch to United in January look slim. This is backed up by journalist Fabrizio Romano, who claims Amorim and Sporting shook on a gentleman’s agreement not to pinch any of their players mid-season.

Sporting are hoping to claim back-to-back league titles for the first time since 1954, having finished top under Amorim last season. Amorim previously ended the club’s 19-year wait for the crown in 2021.

Meanwhile, United are keeping tabs on 17-year-old right winger Geovany Quenda. The attacker was handed his Sporting debut by Amorim last season and has played in every league game so far this campaign.
