Manchester United transfer target Viktor Gyokeres has proven his worth yet again by scoring another three goals in his latest Sporting CP performance.

Ever since Ruben Amorim made the switch from Lisbon to Man United, goalscoring sensation Gyokeres was linked with following his former manager. Although both manager and striker have previously poured cold water on any January transfer taking place, anticipation still continues to build for the summer 2025 window.

Should Amorim be tempted to dip into the market this month for a new attacker, rather than wait it out for Gyokeres, his former player has sent a timely reminder that he should be viewed as the top target above anyone else.

Last night the Sweden international netted his 71st, 72nd and 73rd goals in 78 appearances for his Portuguese club. The first came after just two minutes, then he grabbed the others in the 14th and 57th minutes.

However, his strikes were in vain as they did not lead to victory. Sporting were forced to rescue a 4-4 draw in added time vs Vitoria SC as the club's woes continue after Amorim's departure.

They held an unbeaten record up until November, but now have been dragged back into a domestic title race with Amorim's replacement already sacked.

Man United haven't been without their own struggles adjusting to their new coach's system mid-season, it could perhaps work in their favour come the summer as both Gyokeres and his suitors look for a reset ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Inherited options Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have continued to struggle, with embarrassment in particular for the latter when jeered as he was substituted before half-time in the defeat to Newcastle last week.

Reports have suggested although the forward possesses a €100m (£83m) release clause, there is an agreement in place with Sporting chiefs to allow a departure in summer for a lower fee of €60-70m (£50-58m).
