Gary Neville isn't on the same page as Arne Slot regarding the Liverpool head coach's rule that players should sleep in their own beds before a home match, a practice welcomed by Virgil van Dijk.

Slot, who took over the helm at Liverpool in the summer, has led his side to an impressive six-point lead at the top of the Premier League with only one loss so far. He has maintained an unbeaten record in the Champions League as well.

While not revamping the entire system at Anfield, Slot has implemented a controversial policy allowing players to stay in their own homes rather than at a hotel on the eve of a home game. This move has been endorsed by the team's skipper Van Dijk, who hasn't missed a minute of his team's dominant run in the domestic league this season.

Although this is a welcome change for some within the club, ex-Manchester United captain Neville has previously expressed his preference for overnight hotel stays before matches, citing team cohesion and freedom from domestic disruptions.

Neville shared his old-school views with former teammate Roy Keane on Stick to Football last year, saying: "We loved it. We liked it [staying in a hotel the night before a game]. Switch on, everyone getting sleep, no one's got kid problems, crying."

Contrastingly, speaking to the Daily Mirror, Van Dijk reflected differently on the impact of Slot's home-sleeping policy amidst the exceptional start to his reign. "It's everyone's own preference, but it's the rules now. Personally, I like to sleep in my own bed, be with my family, and so it works out quite well," Van Dijk expressed.

"But, what we did in the past worked out quite well, too, as we've been very successful in terms of winning. Personally, at this stage of my life, I definitely like to be as much at home as possible. I've got all the resources to be getting myself ready in terms of recovery, whether it's a pool, sauna, ice bath, you know anything I need to to get ready.

"Obviously, we travel quite a lot [as well]; FaceTime is a big tool that could sort of keep you a little with your family. But this year, the regime has changed, and we have a little bit more time to be home and not spending time in too many hotels, and it gives you a little bit more time to be with your family."

The Dutch defender will be spending Saturday evening with his family ahead of the Reds' crucial clash against Neville's United at Anfield. This match promises to be a turning point for both the league leaders and their fierce rivals, who are currently languishing in 15th place in the table.

Liverpool.com says: It makes sense for the players to be trusted the night before a game. You can sleep better at home than in a hotel and therefore that is the best preparation for playing.
