Former Wales defender Paul Dummett was involved in a car crash on his way to training, causing his debut for his new club to be delayed.

The former Newcastle United man joined Carlisle from Wigan Athletic earlier this month, but missed their 1-0 defeat to Bradford City on Saturday having been involved in the crash the night before.

Fortunately, the 33-year-old did not suffer any serious injuries and escaped with cuts and bruises - with his coach confirming that he will be back and available to train this week. He is expected to be fit in time for the League Two side's trip to Fleetwood on Saturday.

"He's OK," Carlisle boss Mike Williamson told the News and Star. "It was a car crash and he's had to just go and get checked over. There's nothing else that's going to be ongoing.

"We just felt as though with the situation and the day he spent [being assessed in hospital], it wasn't advisable to involve him today. But he will be hopefully fit and ready to go next week. He was in [on Saturday]. He saw the doc [club doctor]."

While he was born in Newcastle, Dummett qualified for Wales through his Welsh grandfather and made his debut for the national side against the Netherlands in 2014. He made five appearances, narrowly missing out on a place in the Euro 2016 squad before ending his international career by making himself unavailable for selection for the second time in two years in 2019.

He left St James' Park last year after 14 years with the Premier League side, joining Wigan on a short-term deal before linking up with former Magpies team-mate Williamson at Carlisle to try to help them off the bottom of League Two.
