Wanderers Women keen to keep building ahead of County Cup tie at Wigan
“Whether it's a league game, a cup game, a friendly, whatever it may be, we are there to win.”
That was the message from Myles Smith as Wanderers Women prepare to take on Wigan Athletic Ladies and Girls in the County Cup.
The Whites enter the tie on the back of an emphatic 9-1 win against Fleetwood Town Wrens and Smith is eager to keep building momentum.
“We are really looking forward to the game. Wigan are a good team, they need to be respected,” he told The Bolton News.
“They are a team who like to play football, they like to have the ball and we like to have the ball. When they don't have it, they want it back and that is the same as us.
“You want to play these matches. They have some similar principles to us which you can see clearly. It will be a good game and it should be a good one for the fans.
“It is nice to have a break from the league but we want to win every game. We want to do that for our fans and for the team.
“Our fans turn up in the hundreds, as we know, and we always go out there to try and put on a good performance, an entertaining display, and make them proud.”
Wanderers were meant to be back on home turf at Atherton Colls last weekend but, unfortunately, the fixture had to be played behind closed doors at Lostock due to the weather conditions.
“We can't wait to play in front of the fans again,” Smith added. “Hopefully, we can expect a good turnout this weekend but obviously the following weekend we are back at home against Morecambe.
“We have really missed playing in front of the fans. The players have echoed that internally and they can't wait to be back in front of our fans. They have been amazing to us this season.
“They have been so loyal. I was actually speaking to someone earlier, a good friend of mine who's a coach in the WSL, and they said they have seen the statistics of how many fans we get. They can’t believe it.
“It is absolutely unbelievable for a tier six football team to get 500-plus fans as an average attendance.
“It is something that needs to be shouted from the rooftops! It is an incredible achievement and it goes to show how great this fanbase are for us.”
Neishai Gordon and Faye Knox both netted hat tricks against Fleetwood as Bolton maintained their 100 per cent record in the league.
“Neishai is doing really well at the moment. She has come back after Christmas and found her form, she is playing with confidence,” said the manager.
“A player like Neishai, I think confidence certainly helps. With any player, you have to make sure that you stay grounded and humble. With any performance, it is always a team.
“Neishai is scoring the goals, as is Faye (Knox), but they don't score those goals if it is not for the rest of the team behind them. The rest of the players on the pitch play just as much an important part.
“Neishai is playing her football, she’s happy, she's enjoying it, she's playing with a smile on her face and that all goes into her being as prolific as she is at the moment.”
Knox has played a key role since arriving from Blackburn Rovers in the summer and Smith is enjoying working with the attacking midfielder, who has experience higher up the pyramid.
“She has been a pleasure to work with,” he insisted. “She keeps everybody on their toes, which is a good thing.
“I have worked really closely with her and on day one, we seem to have trusted one another and that is an important part.
“I think what she gives to this football club, we can all see it, she is a player who has got huge amounts of potential.
“She is still only a very young player, I think we forget that. She can go very far in her career and have a very successful career in the game.”
