Wanderers Women welcome back key striker for Fleetwood clash
Wanderers Women are excited to be back on home turf as they prepare to host Fleetwood in the league.
Myles Smith’s side are six points clear at the top of the table following last weekend’s 4-1 in at Workington in difficult conditions.
The Whites won 9-0 at Fleetwood earlier in the season but Smith insists it will be a different test this time around.
“We are looking forward to being back at home,” he told the club channels. “It has been a while since we played there, we are certainly looking forward to having our fans back and having the big crowd we get at home games. We are looking forward to playing in front of them.
“Fleetwood, we played them such a long time ago and they have made changes, similar to what Workington had done.
“They have come a long way and improved. They have probably not had the results they would have wanted, but I have been to a few games and the performances have been there.
“It is not going to be an easy game and we will need to make sure that we do everything right to get the result.”
The squad have been handed a boost ahead of the fixture with the return of Jess Lightfoot, who is on a dual registration deal from Everton.
Lightfoot was in prolific form during the first half of the season but was unavailable for the last couple of games, having returned to the Toffees to be included in the squad against Liverpool before Christmas.
“Jess obviously got recalled back by Everton, which can happen as part of the agreement we have,” Smith explained.
“It was a great opportunity for her to be in the squad for a Merseyside derby, which is a massive fixture.
“She will be coming back into join us now after a bit of a break over the Christmas spell. She will be joining in with the rest of the team in training.
“Obviously, we have to bed her back in. She has been doing work in the break with Everton, with their strength and conditioning coaches, but she will be coming back to join us and ready for selection this weekend.”
Sunday’s game against the Cod Army kicks off at 2pm at the Dreams2Reality Stadium, the home of Atherton Colls.
