WARRINGTON Rylands had what would have been a superb away win snatched away from them at the death on Tuesday night.

A 97th-minute equaliser from Luke Shiels allowed high-flying hosts Worksop Town to escape with a 3-3 draw, completing a comeback having trailed 3-1 at half-time with Aaron Martin having halved the deficit late on.

Neil Reynolds' side had stormed back from the blow of conceding early after Liam Hughes converted a penalty for the hosts, with Ben Hardcastle netting twice either side of Jake Burton's strike to send them into the break in control.

Nevertheless, the point allowed Blues to jump out of the relegation places - they leapfrog FC United of Manchester on goal difference.

Last-gasp leveller 'really cruel,' says Reynolds

By his own admission, Reynolds admits his side may have been slightly fortunate to beat Workington at the weekend but on Tuesday, the shoe was on the other foot.

And he says that while his players were “devastated” with how the victory was snatched away from them, he was proud of how they performed against the high-flying Tigers.

“It’s cruel, football – really cruel,” he said.

“It’s a game that we probably deserved to win but credit to Worksop as they didn’t quit.

“The game should have lasted 95 minutes but it lasted 97 – the ref will have to give us the answers there but they kept going and got the equaliser.

“Sometimes you don’t get what you deserve and I thought, to a man, we were fantastic tonight.

“I don’t think we were great on Saturday but I thought we were exceptional in every area tonight.

“I’m super proud – the lads are devastated that we haven’t seen the game through but we’ll learn from it and we’ll go again.

“We responded really well to going behind, got the equaliser and then the second goal is superb with the through-ball from Harrison Hopper to Jake. Then we see probably one of the goals of the season with Ben Hardcastle and we’re in control of the game.

“We could have gone four or 5-1 up at the start of the second half, but we needlessly gave the ball away and allowed them to get back to 3-2.

“Even then, we were managing the game but then we don’t stop the cross, lose the first contact and they equalise.

“We’ve all been there, conceding in the last minute, and that’s football.”
