TWO second half goals ensured Scunthorpe United put pressure on the league leaders with a 2-0 win at Warrington Town.

Danny Whitehall fired them in front on the hour mark to finally break the resolve of the lowly Yellows, who had the best chance of the first half when Elliot Morris was released through on goal only to be denied by Ross Fitzsimons.

Substitute Mo Fadera made sure of the points nine minutes from time, rounding the ‘keeper to score.

Goals have been a problem all season for the Yellows and Morris’ chance, set up by Jay Harris, on seven minutes could have given them a platform for points that they desperately needed only for his shot to be parried away at a comfortable height by Fitzsimons.

At the other end, Dan Atherton was out quick to snuff out a chance for Alfie Beestin after Ollie Southern’s hesitation, and then Callum Roberts hit a left-foot shot just wide.

The big talking point of the first half came minutes before the break, when Matty McDonald was pulled down apparently in the box by Andrew Boyce when through, and though Boyce was booked, the referee decided the contact had taken place right on the edge of the box.

Scunthorpe stepped up the tempo after the break and they fired an early warning shot when Kian Scales’ cross across goal was just missed by an offside Roberts at the back post.

The same route was followed on 61 minutes for the opening goal, Scales being left in space to find Whitehall in the box, the number nine steading himself and getting the ball out of his feet before firing in to the back of the net.

The visitors controlled the game from there on in, though out of nowhere Joe Rodwell-Grant thundered a 25-yard effort off the woodwork.

Within seconds, the points were sealed, Fadera latching on to a through ball and rounding Atherton to make it 2-0.

The Yellows, now with just one league win in 17, have three consecutive away games starting with a trip to Leamington on Tuesday night.
