Warrington Wolves close in on Wigan forward for 2026
THE 2025 season may not have started yet, but Warrington Wolves are closing in on a new addition for 2026.
The Warrington Guardian understands The Wire are set to seal a move for Wigan Warriors forward Liam Byrne in order to add size and depth to their pack.
The Ireland international has entered the final year of his deal with the Super League and Challenge Cup holders and due to new rules allowing players in such a situation to discuss deals from December as opposed to May, he has been free to speak to rival clubs about potential moves for 2026.
As such, Warrington have made their move and it is understood the 25-year-old has opted to join Sam Burgess’ side from next year onwards.
Byrne’s arrival could sound the starting gun for plenty of change in the Wire middle unit, with Paul Vaughan, Zane Musgrove and Jordy Crowther all in the final year of their deals with the club.
All of their futures are currently unclear, with Vaughan in particular having been heavily linked with a return to his native Australia in 2026.
Since debuting for Wigan back in 2019, Byrne has turned out 126 times for the Warriors and has been a part of two Grand Final-winning sides.
He has also helped Matt Peet’s side lift the Challenge Cup twice, coming off the bench when they won at Wembley last year at Warrington’s expense.
He also started in the front row when Wigan beat NRL champions Penrith Panthers in last year's World Club Challenge.
Internationally, he has been capped seven times by Ireland and turned out for them at the most recent Rugby League World Cup back in 2022.
