Warrington Wolves injury latest as squad head to Tenerife
WARRINGTON Wolves are today heading for sunnier climes as they jet off to their warm-weather training camp in Tenerife.
And when they get there, it appears the vast majority of the squad will be able to take a full part in what head coach Sam Burgess has planned.
There are a couple of exceptions, however, with Burgess confirming that four of his first-team stars will not feature in Toby King’s Testimonial match against Leigh Leopards upon their return from the Canary Islands.
However, he is confident winger Josh Thewlis, hooker Sam Powell, prop James Harrison and second-rower Lachlan Fitzgibbon will be fit for the start of the Super League season.
Fitzgibbon and Powell are both in the final stages of their recoveries having both undergone shoulder surgery, with the former going under the knife before the end of the 2024 campaign while the latter did so during the off-season.
Thewlis also had an operation on a shoulder issue of his own while Harrison has been managing a back injury.
Burgess said Thewlis and Harrison “would probably get away” with playing against Adrian Lam's Leopards in a match to honour King’s decade of service to The Wire on February 1 but a cautious approach is being taken to ensure their readiness for competitive action.
He also revealed Fitzgibbon and Powell are on the verge of a return to full training well in advance of the new season.
“There’s a couple who won’t play, the ones you’d expect,” Burgess said when asked whether any of his squad would not feature against Leigh.
“Powell won’t play, Fitzy and I probably won’t play Thewlis and Jimmy.
“We’d probably get away with playing Thewlis and Jimmy but I don’t need to risk it. They’ll be right for the start.
“Thewlis and Jimmy are in full training now. Powelly and Fitzy aren’t but they’re close and will be close for Round One.”
