How many teams in College Football Playoff 2024?

For the first time in the College Football Playoff era, the field will expand from a four-team field to a 12-team field, starting this season.

How does College Football Playoff format work?

The top four teams in the CFP will be rewarded with a first-round bye. For the first time, there will be on-campus games in addition to the expanded playoffs.

The top five highest-ranked conference champions will receive an automatic bid: the power-four conference and one Group of 5 champion. If the Group of 5 champion is not among the top 12 teams in the final rankings, it will automatically be placed at No. 12. The top-four seeds earn a first-round bye.

Seven at-large bids will make up the rest of the CFP field. Seeds No. 5 through No. 12 will play in first-round games either at the home sites of the highest-seeded team or at a location chosen by the high seed. No. 5 will host No. 12; No. 6 will host No. 11; No. 7 will host No. 10; and No. 8 will host No. 9 in the first round.

Winners of the first round advance to the quarterfinals, where the top-four seeded teams will be waiting. With no re-seeding for the bracket, the No. 1 team will play the winner of the No. 8/9 game, while No. 2 plays the winner of No. 7 and No. 10, and so forth. The CFP committee won't make an effort to avoid regular-season rematches.

The Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Sugar Bowl will host the four quarterfinal games. Like the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the highest-ranking team will choose where to play. Semifinal locations include the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl, while Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will host the 2025 College Football Playoff championship game.
