Jamie Shaul rolled back the years to score a hat-trick of tries for Goole Vikings in their 26-18 1895 Cup win over North Wales Crusaders on Sunday afternoon. The former Hull FC full-back, still only 32, crossed over three times at the Victoria Pleasure Ground—including one speedy full-length effort.

The new League 1 outfit drew 526 supporters to their first professional home game since 1902. Playing their third fixture of the year after Challenge Cup ties against London Broncos and Wakefield Trinity, Goole won their second game of the season, with Shaul crossing over in each half. Elsewhere, former Hull KR back Josh Guzdek and Goole-born Tom Halliday each added a try of their own.

However, the Vikings had to dig deep after falling 10-0 behind early on. Mackenzie Harman was sin-binned, and the Crusaders took advantage, scoring through Patrick Ah Van and Joshua Eaves. But Shaul was soon to get into his groove, entering the attacking line and dotting down before a full length of the field turned the clock back, and in turn, put the Vikings 12-10 up at half-time.

A second Goole sin bin then came for Tyler Craig, but the numerical disadvantage didn't matter this time, with Guzdek extending the home side's lead. But in a game that had its fair share of twists and turns, North Wales then hit back, scoring through Sam Wilde and drawing level after a penalty goal.

That stalemate continued into the final ten minutes, before Halliday landed a crucial score in the 72nd minute. The victory was then sealed through Shaul, who completed his hat-trick with a slick chip and chase, collecting the ball to score, and in doing so, bringing his career total to 107 tries from 212 appearances.
