Liverpool return to Anfield for FA Cup third round action against Accrington Stanley this Saturday lunchtime. Arne Slot has big decisions to make regarding squad rotation with the League Two side also out to cause a major upset.

The festive period could not have gone much better for the Reds as they accumulated a grand points advantage at the top of the Premier League. However, failure to win their opening two matches of 2025 - a 2-2 league draw with Manchester United and a Carabao Cup semi-final first leg away to Tottenham 1-0 - has somewhat dampened spirits.

Whilst many fans may be thinking 'Accrington Stanley, who are they?', the next match won't be a straightforward task as Slot is expected to counter current injury problems with changes.

"If you are in a league with so many games, one of the most important things is to give players a rest when possible," he said at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

On the possibility of Federico Chiesa earning rare on-field minutes, Slot responded: "Every game is a chance for everyone to play, it's not only for him [it's] been difficult because all the things you said, match fitness, he has to compete with [Cody] Gakpo, [Luis] Diaz, [Diogo] Jota, [Darwin] Nunez, [Mohamed] Salah. Let's see how much he can help us because second half more important than first."

And the opportunity may spring for youngsters to get involved. The boss was asked specifically about highly-rated 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha and 17-year-old Trey Nyoni.

"Trey been in the squad a lot of times, Rio only once. But they are doing really well, so as long as they keep doing that, their chances of first-team involvement will increase," he replied.

Team news

With the next Premier League fixture after this coming around so soon on Tuesday away to Nottingham Forest, it remains to be seen how heavily Slot rotates his team in the cup.

So far in 2025 Dominik Szoboszlai has been missing through illness, though has returned to training with the Under-21s on Thursday after a light first-team recovery training session ended up being cancelled due to the first-team squad's trouble flying back from Tottenham the night before.

Also, against Spurs, Jarell Quansah was substituted early on. He was confirmed to be recovering from illness too.

And caution will have to be taken with both Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley, who have been eased back into action over the last two matches after their respective six-week injury lay-offs.
