A 10-YEAR-OLD pool player from New Inn, Pontypool has been beating opponents three times his age.

Kylain Allcock, 10, has been shaking up the pool scene in Torfaen playing for the Teazer pub.

"I don't celebrate much but I am exploding inside," said Kylain, who goes to New Inn Primary School, on the feeling when he beats adults.

The team plays in the Cwmbran and Pontypool district and Kylain has been a key member of their team this season.

Kylain got into pool when he saw his dad, Stefan, playing. Kylain has been playing for for the last few months and is beginning to win some matches against experienced players.

Stefan, an experienced pool player himself, proudly said: "I struggle to beat him now."

Both father and son are also actively involved in football in the area. Kylain plays with Griffithstown AFC and Stefan coaches at New Inn AFC.

However, what is special about pool is that they can play together on the same team.

Stefan said: "It's quite unique, there's not many sports you could do it like this. It's nice to play together."

Lou Parfitt, the landlady of the Teazer pub said: "The previous owners said anyone under 14 couldn't play at the table but I wanted to change that."

Ms Parfitt wanted to provide the right environment for Kylain to practice and enjoy his pool playing.

"The boys are amazing here. They really look out for him."

She said that not all venues are keen to allow Kylain to play because of his age and concerns around licensing.

Kylain has big ambitions for his pool playing and one of the items on the top of his list of goals is to have a kids team in the area.

"I want to get a local kids team around here," he said. His advice for anyone taking up the sport was to "practice, practice and practice".

Stefan said pool is a great activity for kids because it is guaranteed to go ahead each week, unlike other sports like football or rugby which can called off because of the weather.

Before father and son had to head to football practice, Kylain had time for one pool game to school this Argus reporter, who was happy to at least pot a few balls.
