Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks are 7-0 in the SEC. They knocked off previously unbeaten LSU in style on Friday night. (The win was somewhat overshadowed by their arena DJ boosting the animosity, inevitably leading to much controversy and a public apology.)
South Carolina has been comfortable as the game’s Goliath for years now. This year’s team has the toughest schedule in the country, per Basketball Reference. And it goes without saying, but any of their conference rivals would move heaven and earth to have the Gamecocks’ current five-year run — 186-10, two national titles and a perfect season.
Seven players score between 7 and 13 points per game, and 10 players average 15 to 25 minutes. Joyce Edwards scored 14 points in 18 galvanizing bench minutes to set the tone against LSU.
Tennessee is a massive underdog at home, but historically, this program is well aware of what it takes to make a dynastic run. The Vols three-peated from 1995 to 1998, and Pat Summitt fit eight championships into one coaching career. The current Volunteers squad is slumping, but this program should never be counted out.
Kim Caldwell will pace the Lady Vols’ sideline just seven days after giving birth to her first child. Now would be quite the time for a stunning upset or at least an inspired fight.
This team leads Division I in points per game, with a swift pace and fearlessness from long range. Jewel Spear and Tess Darby load up above the break. Talaysia Cooper is a bucket inside while leading the conference with more than three steals per game.
But Tennessee has dropped two close ones in a row: a heartbreaker to Vanderbilt and a hard-fought 4-point loss at No. 7 Texas. Their four Ls have been by a total of eight points.
All-time record: Tennessee leads 51-16. But South Carolina enters Knoxville Monday night with a seven-game head-to-head win streak.
