Roy Keane claimed Arsenal are ‘not good enough’ and ‘a shambles’ as they crashed to a 5-1 Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich, with the former Manchester United captain pulling few punches in a scathing attack on Arsene Wenger’s side.

Arsenal look certain to exit the Champions League at the last-16 stage for a seventh straight season after their humbling in Germany, with Keane telling ITV Sport that Wenger was let down by a team that crumbled as they conceded four second half goals.

“They were very, very poor, but I am not surprised,” began Keane. “What were you expecting? Did you think they would go to Bayern Munich and get a result?

“We have said it before and we keep repeating ourselves about a lack of leaders, lack of desire, but I have to say that in at this level, they are not good enough. There is no point in being too critical because they are not up to it. They have two decent players, but the rest….average.

“I don’t think Bayern were at their very best. They didn’t have to be. The goals Arsenal gave away…schoolboy stuff. Shambles.”

Keane was especially critical of Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin, who backed off Arjen Robben in the build-up to Bayern’s first goal and offered up the chance for the Dutch winner to open the scoring.

“You see Coquelin when Robben gets the ball and you think, no danger,” continued Keane. “Football intelligence tells you to try and keep him towards your own players.

“Instead, he takes a step and lets Robben cut in on his favourite side. My goodness, that is schoolboy stuff, football intelligence. That doesn’t come from the manager. “That’s about a player doing a little but of homework and trying to keep a player on his weaker side. He takes and step and invites him to cut inside. The top players will punish you.

“We go back to leaders in the game, being organised at the back. When you are not at your best, it’s all about taking your medicine if you are two or 3-1 down, stay in the game.

“When I see Gibbs with the captain’s armband on at the end of the game, you are in big trouble. If he is your captain, your leader, guy who is going to bring everyone together…you are in huge trouble.”

Keane also offered his views on Wenger’s future, as he suggested the Arsenal boss may be ready to walk away from his job after 21 years.

“Arsene Wenger will decide whether he decides or not,” he added. “There seems to be no pressure from the board and only he will know when the time is to go, but he did look like a tired man tonight.”
