Watford 2 West Brom 1 minute-by-minute report
Two very-well-taken goals from Vakoun Bayo earned Watford a gutsy and often classy 2-1 win over West Brom.
It ended Albion’s 12-game unbeaten run and made it 15 games without a loss at Vicarage Road under Tim Cleverley.
The Hornets made four changes to their starting line-up, with James Morris, Moussa Sissoko, Rocco Vata and Kwadwo Baah all in the team.
Francisco Sierralta, Tom Ince, Yasser Larouci and Edo Kayembe all dropped to the bench.
The team also changed in shape, with a flat back four, two midfielders, and then three attacking players behind Vakoun Bayo up front.
The first half was absorbing, a good tactical and physical battle between two sides who looked well organised.
Both had chances, and the Baggies wasted a couple of good ones near the break, but the Hornets got their noses in front with a really-well crafted goal finished equally tidily by Bayo.
When Watford extended their lead early in the second half it looked like they could cut loose and get more goals, but Albion pulled one back.
However, the Hornets gave a fine battling display of defending and breaking with pace, and the visitors never really looked like salvaging a draw.
Here’s how the game unfolded:
6 – Chakvetadze stole the ball and raced through the middle with the Albion defence back-pedalling. He got to the box and chose to pass to Bayo rather than continue and the ball was blocked.
8 - Great defending from Porteous to clear a low cross from Fellows who got free down the right.
11 - Bachmann's attempt to play out from the back is blocked, Molumby seizes on the ball but his shot hits his own teammate Maja.
15 - Excellent cross from Ngakia isn't cleared by the Albion defence and Vata controls the ball on his chest before hammering a shot against the bar.
17 - Another probing run from Chakvetadze takes him into the box but his low shot is straight at Palmer.
23 - Cross deflected into the path of Racic who shoots wide from the edge of the box.
31 - Vata's cross fell to Sissoko, his shot was blocked and the ball ran to Louza, who shot over the top.
35 – Watford 1 (Bayo) West Brom 0
Really well worked goal. Chakvetadze carried the ball and then reversed it to Vata on the left. He checked back and then crossed for Bayo to steer a header inside the back post.
41 - Bachmann does well to stretch and tip away a powerful shot from a tight angle from Grant.
42 - Good chance for Albion as Styles finds space in the left of the box but then shoots across the face of goal.
45 - Incredible miss from Grant who receives the ball just outside the six-yard box in the centre of goal but proceeds to do no more than pass it to Bachmann.
Half-time – Watford 1 West Brom 0
48 - Sissoko crossed from the right and Bayo was only stopped from converting it by the combined challenges of Palmer and Holgate.
50 – Watford 2 (Bayo) West Brom 0
Another great combination between Vata and Bayo. Vata showed a great piece of skill to get free on the left before looping a cross which Bayo jumped to control with his chest before stroking the ball inside the back post.
62 - So close! Sissoko stole the ball and then took a return from Chakvetadze in the box. Hs shot was blocked, the ball ran to Baah and his effort was deflected over the bar.
67 – Watford 2 West Brom 1 (Mulumby)
Johnston cut in from the left and hit a shot that was blocked but fell perfectly for Mulumby, whose shot Bachmann got a hand to but couldn't keep out.
79 - Swift fired a shot-yard shot which Bachmann dived to tip away and then gather.
89 - Chakvetadze stole the ball on halfway, sped into the box but then fired over from a tight angle.
90+3 - Bachmann makes a good save to keep out Furlong's header from a corner
